the only show i was forbidden to watch as a kid was married with children

I can't imagine a young boy being too interested in bonding with his dad (or mom) over soaps.

hey but this was married with children and plenty of young boys wanted their weekly fix of T&A Chat Icon

Re: Kids and soap operas...

I think I was 10 or 11 when I started watching the soaps. My mom did not get me into it though because she does not understand English too well but my older cousins are who got me into it. I remember when they used to come over my mom's house for christmas eve and they always put it on, so I sat down with them one day and watched it and got hooked right away. I grew up with AMC, OLTL, and GH.

DH's 11 year old nieces watches them when my MIL visits my SIL's house.

Re: Kids and soap operas...

I've been watching ABC soaps since I was 5. I remember coming home from school and watching General Hospital with my grandma.

Re: Kids and soap operas...

I actually wrote a term paper on this when I was in High School.

It was all about the benefits of Soap Operas (I called it Bubble, Bubble, Soaps Help Troubles - I was so clever Chat Icon )

It talked about what another poster mentioned - it's an excellent jumping off point for parents to talk about drinking, drugs, sex, relationships, etc. (As well as evil twins, devil possession and coming back from the dead, but I digress).

But if it's introduced too young, it can be too much for a child. The research said kids should be between 8-10 (depending on maturity level) before they should be exposed to them.

I KNEW that term paper would come in handy some day!! Chat Icon
