i don't see a nursing baby as sexual. to me, the nipple in this scenario appears like a nipple. bottle or flesh. it's the same to me.
But this thread isn't about nursing a baby.....it was turned into that.
IT IS ABOUT WHAT IS APPROPRIATE IN A 4 YO CLASSROOM!!!!!!
and yes I'm yelling and not directed at anyone in particular but I think this is utterly ridiculous.
I could give a poo about BF when its an adult but at 4yo a kid does not need to put another kids face up to their chest to simulate ANYTHING!!!!!
We need to teach our children personal space at that age!!!!
Yes, this exactly!!
Some people need to take down their immediate defenses every time they see the words "breast feeding."
Jeez.
Why can't we teach a child about personal space AND about the body and its functions ? Why does one cancel out the other ?
Because at age four its not an appropriate forum to do it in the classroom. YOU yes YOU can do it at home.
We are not taking any rights away from you. \You get to teach your kids whatever you want at home.
At school you have to be neutral.
You are also not getting a SINGLE BF right taken away by keeping the teaching out of the schools and teaching it at home at a young age.
This IS not about BF people making it a federal case need to step back and breathe.

Re: Kids pretending to breastfeed at school
Posted by MrsA1012 I am absolutely not blaming the teacher. Only society.
What is wrong with society? It's HUMAN instinct for men to find breasts appealing and attractive. If it wasn't, THEY wouldn't. Why should society on the whole be expected to change their views on breasts? Should men also not find a woman's ass attractive b/c it's just for sitting or crapping? It's a ridiculous concept to be honest, to expect the world to not find body parts of women attractive. We are not as simplistic as other mammals who mate just to procreate, therefore, men (and women) will be attracted to the human body.
Just b/c a minority of the population wants to desexualize breasts b/c they use theirs functionally just to feed, that's not the reality of the world. Some women don't use theirs for feeding even if they have a child and most women NEVER will use their breasts for feeding a child and THAT"S PERFECTLY OK.

Ok you were talking about the body and it's functions? My answer still applies though. The teacher's job is not to discuss the bodily functions with children, ESPECIALLY since they also serve the purpose of sexual function for people as well. So sexuality does still come into play here. That's why many people believe there is an age where it is appropriate to learn the various functions of the body, and that age need not be 4 years old in preschool.

Actually, most women who have a child DO breastfeed, at least initially.
CDC reference
Not sure where your facts were from, but they aren't accurate. I don't think anyone is trying to convince men (or women) to not be attracted to breasts.

That study is only considering women who have babies--not women who don't have children. Or men. So yes, a minority of the population uses their breasts for feeding. That's a fact.

I said SOME women who have a child won't use their breasts for feeding and MOST women never will use their breasts for feeding. When you combine the women who won't ever even have children with women who have children who still don't BF (plenty of moms NEVER BF)< that would likely equal the majority of women in the world.
And yes, it does seem that some who BF want the rest of the world to only see the fact that breasts produce milk. That's been brought up so many times on this thread, as if it's a crime or unfathomable that breasts serve just sexual purposes to many people.

really they aren't because I couldn't tell by the whole "Breast are just for feeding" and you should teach your son the purpose of what Breast are for so he doesn't grow up to be of ignorant!

My mind is blown by this thread.
I still can't wrap my head around the people who think this is a BF and not a safety issue for the teacher and kids.
Some of you need to get a grip on your social activism.

One more thing : I bet money that those who wouldn't want the teacher discussing breast feeding in school did not breast feed or do not plan to breast feed themselves. I think it speaks to how normal the topic is to you.
WOW!!!

Just because they aren't sexual to you doesn't mean they aren't sexual to other people. Perhaps it would help society if this belief was challenged. Of course breasts have a strong sexual component, but their primary evolutionary function is to nourish a child. I think attitudes towards nursing in public and nursing in general would improve if people rememembered that breasts have an additional purpose.

Re: Kids pretending to breastfeed at school
While some people view breast feeding as beautiful and natural, and not a big deal, etc- not every other family feels that way. some religions prohibit women from showing any part of their bodies - who knows what kind of belief systems these kids have in her class?
It is not the job nor the responsibility of the teacher to start teaching about the beauty of breast feeding, and it is not an issue if a teacher just tells a kid to not do that right now, do it in private, and start playing something else.
Breast feeding is an adult argument - not a kid argument - and I am sorry - in a diverse setting with various belief systems, it is just not the place to present that issue.

Re: Kids pretending to breastfeed at school
What if the little girl was simulating child birth, legs spread out and putting the baby doll between her legs? That is not sexual. And it is natural - just not appropriate for a 4 year old class.

Re: Kids pretending to breastfeed at school
Not for nothing, but when DS was 4 we went to the zoo and there were 2 zebras full on doing the nasty and he did not ask one question about what they were doing. And it was pretty damn graphic. If it was an animal nuzzling at it's mother's teat, I doubt he would have asked about that either.

One more question : for all those who don't think a school should explain breast feeding how do you feel about health classes that talk in depth about the menstrual cycle, illegal drugs, birth control and sexually transmitted diseases ? Those are certainly controversial topics and schools talk about them. A big problem in this society is ignorance and misinformation about "taboo" topics. Maybe it would be better for us all if things were more openly discussed. Before everyone jumps on me, I am not suggesting we teach 4 year olds about sex, BUT I think open, honest communication about factual, scientific subjects is a good thing. Parents sign a permission slip before their HS kids attend health classes discussing those topics
