To the op from a different perspective I think you are being a little overly sensitive. I don't think the teachers intention was to shame your daughter but reacting in that moment. Maybe the use of private wasn't the best word but she probably just wanted to put an end to what was happening. Don't forget children ask a lot of questions. So maybe that was her way of just getting her to stop.
Regardless of wether you are comfy breast feeding your child anywhere without a cover, I still think there is a difference between a 4yr doing it at school and showing it to the other kids. I know me as a parent wouldn't want my child putting any attention (shirt up or down) to his/her chest in public. That's just something I have as a parent. This has nothing to do with my stance on Bf or exposing my child to it. If you want to feed your baby wherever and I'm around, I don't care - it's a part of life. And if my son asked questions I would answer them. No biggy.
Here's an examples: My sister BF and my niece mimicked her but she wasn't allowed to do that outside the house. My sister did not want her drawing attention to her chest.
If you are comfortable with your DD pretend BF then that's your right as a parent and can allow her to do it. But I would just tell her to not do it in school. Trust me I don't think she is traumatized against breast feeding and I doubt this set her back.
Just keep in mind, we are talking about a school environment with children who have parents with other opinions and views. It's not the place for a breast feeding platform IMHO.
That was very well said I couldnt' agree with you more. Also not everyone is comfortable with seeing people breastfeed in public and I being one of them. As natural as it is I personally think it is something that should be done in private. If that makes me ignorant than so be it but not everyone is comfortable with what you are! We are all entitled to our opinions. I personally feel mostly for the teacher in this situation. The 4 year old has probably forgotten about this already!

I admire that some of you are passionate about breastfeeding, but not all people are.
But that's not my problem - I don't have to change my lifestyle to suit other people's ignorance. Mothers have the right to feed their children wherever and whenever they please. Teaching behaviors like this at a young age just make it more difficult down the road.
I think you are out of line JME78 by calling other people ignorant. Who are you to make that judgment upon anyone! Maybe you are the ignorant one because you can't see beyond your own self and beliefs!

Re: Kids pretending to breastfeed at school
The teacher was right. You cannot allow a girl to pull up her shirt at school, it is not appropriate. The reason she did it does not matter.
It is not going to scar her for life against breastfeeding in public.

That part doesn't matter. She is still a kid. When she grows up and actually nurses a baby, that is fine.
I did the same thing as a kid. I sat next to my mom on a park bench at age 4, my mom was next to me nursing my baby brother. I pulled my shirt up and imitated her with my doll.
My mom told me "you cannot pull your shirt up in public like that. Pull it down and feed your baby doll over your shirt. Only mommies pull up their shirts to feed the babies."
The teacher was right.

As a parent I don't want MY child pulling his/her shirt regardless of the reason. I have reasons for it and that's my perspective on privacy. Not every parent is ok with this, why is that hard to understand? And it has nothing to do with BF. Some parents don't mind changing their 4 year olds in public or have them running around a pool with no top or in their underwear. I do, different parenting styles.
Also, do we even know if the child pulled up her shirt? I been kind of following this thread but don't know if I missed where the OP confirmed what actually happened.

I dont understand how anyone does NOT see that CHILDREN are molested, inappropriately touched and ACCUSE (falsely or correctly) others of inappropriate touching. It DOES happen and it's VERY serious for the child and for the staff who work with children. Or even fellow students.
It is NOT ok for a child to expose "private" parts in class, for ANY reason. To protect themselves and OTHERS. Why is that SO difficult for anyone to understand in this case???
This is a very serious topic and issue for those who work with children. Not a matter of tip toeing around whose family does what when the child is with them (vs a teacher).
Keeping kids safe and keeping adults/other children safe from inappropriate actions/accustions is the ONLY priority of a teacher.

But a 4yo doesnt have breasts or a child to feed, and a 4yo is a CHILD who must be kept safe by a teacher. And a 4yo is a child who could also accuse falsely or accurately, another child or adult of something INAPPROPRIATE< so you just can't allow ANYTHING to go there as a preschool teacher. End of story.

If this was the case, the teacher would've told the child she can't lift her shirt in school. NOT that she can't pretend to BF in school, which according to the OP is what she was told.

But this isn't about what breasts are made for. Assuming it's a little girl pulling up her shirt, it's about teaching her that this is only appropriate for her to do in private. That is the point. Stop taking it as anti-breastfeeding. It's about keeping a LITTLE girl safe and understanding that pulling up her shirt is not appropriate to do in PUBLIC. That's it.

Right.
What if another child was pretending to be the baby and nurse off the other child? I know most little girls play mommy and baby and cradle up like babies, feed each other, etc. Would it be appropriate for children to act it out on each other too? Where does the line get crossed where something INAPPROPRIATE can occur?
Until women normally walk around topless, this is always going to be a fine line. They can't just be "breasts for feeding", but then we teach our DDs to not allow anyone to touch them, must wear clothing and have their chests covered etc.

Exactly and it's also like saying that the purpose of women is to have babies and give birth. What if you your daughter grows up to not want to have babies? Not everyone including your child will grow up to feel this way regardless of what views you shove down their throats.
This is about a school setting and your child not being the ONLY one in the class. It's about being respectful to other people's views, not being ignorant to the fact that other people may not see it how you do?

I actually don't even see it as this. I see it as strictly a line that can't be crossed in school re body parts, privacy, inappropriate touching, etc in order to keep kids safe. Not a matter of children not even knowing about BF, etc.

My point was just because you are ok with your child doing this in class doesn't mean other parents want this for their kids. There are other children in the class that the teacher has to to think about.
This was more for the comments of you can't shield your child and I'm ok with my kid doing this so tough! There are things that are done in my home that shouldn't be done in school and my son knows this.
Regardless I think the teacher was right and school is not the setting for this. Myself and other parents I know would not be comfortable with their child lifting their shirt or even just drawing attention to their chest.
Eta: the reason for my view has nothing to do with breast feeding.

Amen sister lol well put.....same for sex (as someone put it earlier on this thread) sex is for procreation so if you're planning on doing it tonight make sure you're trying for another child otherwise you are not using your vagina for its sole purpose to birth a baby!!!! Ridiculous? Yup it is! so is the argument that breasts or any other body part has one sole purpose....thank god for differences and choices

Regardless of views one chooses to "shove down" a child's throat, it doesn't change THE FACT that BREASTS are for BREAST FEEDING BABIES! And our culture is one if the few that has such trouble with this concept. Regardless of whether you "believe" women should or shouldn't breastfeed, doesn't change the science behind it.
So maybe if EVERYONE taught their children the PROPER use for female breasts, threads like this wouldn't even need to exist. If young children viewed breastfeeding as the NORMAL WAY a mother feeds a baby, maybe they would even grow up to breastfeed or support their breastfeeding partners.

Kids pretending to breastfeed at school
So should I teach my 6yr old son to respect his penis because the purpose of his penis is to stick in a girls vagina to procreate. And then maybe he can simulate that in class??
I know it's seems extreme but it's the same concept when you think about it? You cant feed a baby that hasn't been made and how does that happen? Lol
