Killing Mosquitos inside the house?
I HATE it when there are mosquitos in the apartment. My wife, DD and DS live in a one bedroom apartment in the city (900 sq. feet) Tiny space for the 4 of us, you would think with such a small space it would be easy to find and kill mosquitos but that's not the case.
MY wife has been sick all week so she has slept a lot. Yesterday morning she woke up with 5 bites on her face and a few on her arm. She stayed home from work and slept all day, she woke up last night with even more bites on her face and arms.
DD and DS are visiting the in laws while my wife is sick.
I got home from work and watched some tv on the couch and after about an hour I noticed a bite on my knee, right elbow, left ankle!
I slept on the floor last night to give my wife some more room on the bed. I woke up around 4am scratching, I had additional bites on my left shin, foot, ear, right calf, foot and index finger. I looked around with my iphone flastlight and saw a mosquito on the wall near my feet and smashed it and then another one on the other wall near my arm and killed them. I was very surprised usually they fly away as I try to squash them, they must have been too full of blood to move.
Then my wife said she heard another one buzzing :(
All in all this morning, I have over 15 bites, she has over 22 bites.
Anyone have tips on finding and killing mosquitos in the house?

Wow that stinks
They have bracelets you could wear. I'd avoid candles in the apt and with kids around. Get a citronella plant for the apt. Get an off mosquito repelling coil Lemon and eucalyptus also deter mosquitos. Wipe down by the windows and doorways with the mosquito home spray. Home Depot has it Make sure there is no standing water. It's a breeding ground for mosquitos.

I hate to even mention this, but if the bites are mostly happening in/near bed, is there any chance it could be bedbugs, and the mosquito is just a coincidence?

Or fleas? It seems unlikely that so many mosquito would have gotten in.

I was just gonna say this We live in the city too and I woke up with a bite on my forehead yesterday! I did catch and kill the mosquito though...No bites since....
ETA: If there were that many mosquitos in the apt, you'd see them, as the poster above said. Do you a dog? Could be fleas as well...

Hi all,
sameinitials >> if the bites are mostly happening in/near bed, is there any chance it could be bedbugs, and the mosquito is just a coincidence? >>
busymomonli >>Or fleas? It seems unlikely that so many mosquito would have gotten in.
Of course bed bugs are a concern.
But this week, I killed a mosquito in the kitchen (my nanny said she killed one in the living room) and early this morning I killed 2 more. The 2 I killed were full of blood, I mean the second one left a big blood smear on the wall.
My wife said she heard the buzzing (after I killed the 2) - so there could be one more. The only other bug that could have the buzzing would be a fly, since bed bugs do not fly/I assume they do not buzz.
As for fleas...could be, my parents dog is staying with us, but he just got his monthly dose of frontline plus.
So I am hoping it is just a bunch of mosquitos...now the question is how to get rid of them.

I would probably want to avoid anything that would create some kind of thing for the babies to inhale.
>>Get a citronella plant for the apt.
Thats a good idea, but I just looked on google, they said that its the oil from the leaves that repel mosquitos. The plant won't...but if I crush the leaves it would repel them.
>>Wipe down by the windows and doorways with the mosquito home spray. Home Depot has it MIght have to do that...but with a 2 year old and a 4 month old, we want to avoid any type of thing that they could inhale.
>>Make sure there is no standing water. It's a breeding ground for mosquitos. True and there isn't any, but perhaps outside. But, what the heck...we live on the 5th floor, isn't that too high for them to fly up to?
Thanks

I live on the 19th floor and we get all manner of insects up here. They don't have a sense of height like we do...

Do you have a ceiling fan? If so, turn that on. Mosquitos don't like fans. My parents had a problem like that and fans help a lot.

Re: Killing Mosquitos inside the house?
Mosquitos were a big issue when we lived in apts b/c people don't have screens and leave their windows open and they swarm in, particularly at night. The best you can do is make sure YOU have screens and try to open and close your front door as quickly as possible. Otherwise, try some of the natural repellents...like we used to use the Avon Skin So Soft moisturizer which supposedly kept them at bay.

Do you have any live house plants? My parents have tons of plans and the Mosquitos multiplied. Burning incense helps a lot and of course finding the culprit.

I wonder if a professional exterminator would be able to help?
Or something like this:
Indoor Mosquito Trapper

This. We were on the 20th floor in Manhattan and saw mosquitos buzzing around up there. After a few bites we learned to just keep the AC running from April through October. We would not open windows.

Killing Mosquitos inside the house?
Friday morning I woke up to my wife closing the window in the bedroom. She said she saw another mosquito inside the window.
The window has been closed all weekend and no more bites...I'm assuming There must be a gap between the screen and the window.
But the bedroom has been very stuffy and hot with the window closed...but I don't want to open the window to inspect the screen, I don't want to let them back in! =/

Killing Mosquitos inside the house?
Going back to this post from last year.
Now that the weather is warming up - mosquitos in my apartment is happening again.
DS had a few bites on his face last week (but it could have been from the park). Sunday night, the wife saw some bug flying around the living room. Yesterday when my daughter woke up from her nap, she had 5 bites on her face.
Last night I killed a mosquito in the kitchen. Saw another one in the bathroom, tried to kill it for 5 minutes but kept missing...stayed in the bathroom for 30 minutes more and couldn't find it again.
This morning as I was about to leave, DS was sitting in his high chair and there is a mosquito ON HIS FACE, I couldn't smack it without slapping my son, so I just waved my hand and the mosquito flew off.
What about those electric light traps/bug zappers that people use in the backyard? If I put one in the living room and one in the bedroom, could that help? (similar to the one NervousNell posted)

What about one of those ultrasonic things that you plug in? Although I think that just keeps them away, doesn't kill the ones you already have. I live next to the woods, and we rarely have mosquitos in our house. Are you leaving windows open?

Killing Mosquitos inside the house?
BargainMama >>Are you leaving windows open?
There are 4 possible points of entry: 1. Windows - we do have the window open in the living room/kitchen/bedroom - but I looked and the screens look solid (but apparently not!) 2. Front door - my dad thinks they are coming in from there, but I've never seen bugs in the hallway before 3. Vent in the bathroom (I assume it connects to the other apartments in the building) 4. AC unit - we have a in wall one, BUT its not pushed all the way in. The previous owners built cabinets so if we pushed the AC all the way in, then the air wouldnt work right. This is in both the bedroom and living room
>>What about one of those ultrasonic things that you plug in?
I heard those don't work well. No personal experience with one though...
luvbuffet >>i light a citronella candle
How long do you leave the candle burning for? Just 1 for your whole house? Are you concerned about the kids inhaling it?

Re: Killing Mosquitos inside the house?
If your A/C unit isn't in there tight, I would get weather stripping and seal off any cracks with it. Block off the bathroom vent for a few days to see if that resolves the problem, or leave the door closed and if you find them in there, that's your source.

That works on mosquitos? I thought it was just for flies :)
luvbuffet >>its not safe to inhale?! oh noo
I have no idea. Was wondering if you knew :)
BargainMama I took one of those swimming pool noodles and cut it up and put that on the side, but thats in the bedroom. The living room has like 8 inches of clearance on all sides, so thats going to be tougher to block up.
soontobemommyof2 >>I thought citronella was natural stuff??
I don't know if its bad. But wood is natural, but standing and breathing in a fire probably isn't the best for your lungs :)

How about citronella candles? I thought it was the same as lighting any other candle inside the house, except with the advantage that it keeps mosquitoes away.
