Re: Killing Mosquitos inside the house?

Where nearby is standing water that is attracting all these mosquitoes ?
Is there a lot of grass nearby, or a pond ?

That's pretty unusual to have that many mosquitoes in your home. There has to be someplace damp where they are laying eggs and hatching new ones.

Oh wow, so I bet they are definitely coming in through that gap in the a/c unit. I would try to figure out something for sure to seal that up! They likely see all the lights on at night and come right into the apartment!

No standing water that I know of and we're on the 5th floor.
No grass/pond - we in NYC nothing like that unless you're in Central Park

But there must be something, but I am not sure where.

Im initially thought MAYBE there is water from the AC unit since its not installed correctly (due to the cabinet). But we had mosquitos this year already and have not turned on the AC unit yet.

Maybe...but I put stuff around the edges, and during the winter (since they built cabinets along the window) I closed the door to the AC unit (the AC unit is inside the cabinet, lol) and we still got mosquitos.

Its very weird

Argh! it has started again.

Last Monday, DS woke up with the side of his face red like he banged it.
Later on in the day a bump formed - that night I killed a mosquito in the bathroom.

Sunday morning I woke up with 5 bites on my face.
That night while watching tv in the living room a mosquito landed on my laptop (couldn't get it but I got a bite on my wrist) then in the kitchen I see another one.

WTF!

Can you buy a bug zapper shaped like a tennis bat?
It's pretty good and rechargeable
If you can't use sprays like off because of kids / Asthma etc
I used this and also topical cream that I applied even on my kids
( I visit country with bad mosquito dengue/ malaria/ etc

Have you tried any of these tips?

http://control-mosquitoes.com/10-ways-to-get-rid-of-mosquitoes-indoors/

And check with our super or building management? Maybe your screens need to be repaired or replaced? Do you get flies too?

The super may also be able to help you find out if there is standing water somewhere in or on the building. Are you near a utility room, or ac condensers. Do you know if any of the neighbors have this problem? Seems odd that it would just be your apartment, for multiple years in a row.

ETA: I just read all your old posts. It could be just your apartment if it is coming through the AC hole. You should probably take the cabinets out & install the ACs properly anyway. It seems odd that it is starting so early in the year.

Are you sure these are mosquitoes ?

It's early in the year for that. I haven't seen any outside and I've been working in my yard every weekend.

Any case, contact your building management for pest control.

Are they drain flies? I get them in my upstairs bathroom shower- I never ever use it. As soon as I see one, I boil several quarts of water, pour it down the drain and it takes care of it.

So very strange, saw 2 mosquitos last Sunday, but other than that 1 bite did not get anymore. Then my wife saw a mosquito on Saturday (where were they from Sunday to Saturday? didn't they need to feed?) - then DS got 12 bites when he woke Sunday.
I looked around the room yesterday afternoon and about 3 feet from where he sleeps between the Ikea standing closet and the wall (there is a gap of a few inches due to the baseboard I see a big mosquito in the corner. Took some manuevering with the fly swatter but got him and he left a BIG smudge of red blood. He must have been very full/tired because he moved very slowly. I actually poked him before he even flew to an inch away.
Then last night (around 2am) I was in the bathroom shaving and killed a small one - no blood

Only works if you can FIND the mosquito :)

Thanks for the link.
I've heard that the ultrasonic thing doesn't really work. :(
As for the oils, my wife said she can't be going to work smelling like that stuff. My sister visited last summer and was paranoid about the bugs so she put oils all over herself and the bedsheet and the ordor was so strong even our clothes from the closet had the smell.

Have not checked with management, but I asked my neighbor about mosquitos (I told her I got tons) and she acted like that was the strangest thing - so I assume she doesn't get them.

We do not get flies - the only bugs I've seen in the apartment are mosquitos and the occasional carpet beetle larva.

>>It could be just your apartment if it is coming through the AC hole

I was just thinking about this last night. Maybe I'll buy a screen and stick it over the AC vent.

>>SusiBee and LemonHead

I'm sure they are mosquitos. I know how they look, plus we get bites and then afterwards (not soon enough!) I find them and kill them. They usually leave blood on the wall after I smash them. Plus when they are stalking me on the couch, I hear the damn buzzing in my ear once in awhile (its funny how that won't hurt us but we still freak out about that buzz)

I agree that it seems very early in the year - but so far I've killed 4. (2 2 weeks ago and 2 last night)

They must be coming from outside - I ASSUME if they were coming from inside the building then we would get them all year round, but its only been the last 2 weeks that it started again.

Has anyone ever contacted building/super for mosquito help? Their pest control person usually just sprays for other pests and we don't want that.

Would they check the screens for us?
I've heard that screens are the responsibility of the apartment owner / the building only has to provide a window guard (so kids don't fall out)

Thanks everyone!

I think in my building, the co-op takes care of screens, but you can check with the management. They might not be able to help with pest control specific to mosquitoes, but they can probably tel you if it is an ongoing issue elsewhere in the building that they are aware of.

There's definitely mosquitoes around. My DD had two bites on her face. One swelled up so badly it looked like she had a black eye.

And I just killed one in my office... 43 stories up.

Killing Mosquitos inside the house?

Woke up at 4:30am and my right hand was itchy.
Turned on the flashlight on my cell phone and I see a black thing fly away.

1 bite on my left hand, 1 on my middle finger (F YOU!) and 2 on my right hand.

I waited a few minutes and I heard a faint buzz in my left ear, I wave my hand around my ear...then I see the bug fly in front of me so I managed to catch it with my right hand.

Red blood came out so she was freshly fed on my blood.

The bedroom was VERY stuffy the whole night, so I had opened the window from 9pm to 11pm - did it come in from the open window or is that just a coincidence?
who knows.

i didn't read through everything but have you tried an exterminator yet? Even if your building has one, you can always hire a private company. They have services where they will look for access points & seal them up for you
