Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
I took Sasha to the doc today because she has a cold and I mentioned to her doc that she still isn't crawling. She pushes herself backwards and rocks on her knees, but doesn't do anything close to crawling forward. She also doesn't pull herself up-- although recently she looks like she might do it.
Anyway-- the doc wanted me to get an evaluation for EI. Up until this point, I just thought-- ok, maybe she'll never crawl and she'll walk soon. Or, it's still normal for her to not be crawling. Although I do feel horrible when we have these large playdates and there are babies much younger than her that are all over the place. It also is hard for me to figure out what things she's into cause mentally-- she is ready for other things, but physically, she can't play the way other babies do her age. I feel bad for her and worry about her development and wonder if I didn't do enough to encourage her motor development.
I guess just hearing that the doc wants her checked out means that there potentially *is* a problem, and it's just so upsetting.
We all just think our babies are perfect and the thought that somethign may not be right is just so hard to take.

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
First,
Second, I wouldn't worry and I am not sure why your ped is. My ped never seemed to care if my DD crawled, it's not even considered a developmental milestone anymore. If it makes you feel any better my DD started taking steps at 12 months holding onto us and the couch, at 15 months she was walking on her own and I am NOT even kidding you when I say this...............my DD FINALLY crawled and pulled herself to sitting and standing at 15 1/2 months AFTER she was already walking.
Babies develop at their own pace. My DD never focused on the physical stuff, she was always more into the fine motor skills and verbal skills. But in the end she is walking, sitting, crawling, pulling herself up, etc.......she just did it in her own time. I really wouldn't worry, Sasha is still young. She will figure it all out even if it's later than some other babies. My DD did......just took some time.

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
she is perfect.
Mine was such a late talker. It got so old in mom groups to constantly hear them associate early talkers to their kids being more intelligent, or how they were always read to...it means nothing. kids are going to be who they are.
EI evaluator told me its as simple as some kids learning how to swim early on and others staying in the shallow end for awhile. At the end of the day it doesn't matter.
I personally don't care when your kid talks, walks, skips...I like nice polite children
But I really did not think crawling was on the list of concerns.
I got so much out of EI. I think more then my kid did. Send an educator out to my home for an hour a week to show me how to play with my kid.

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
I can understand your concern, but I can tell you that my ped doesn't consider crawling a milestone at all anymore. DS didn't crawl until 9.5 months and he didn't walk until 15 months. It really is true, every baby is different. It can't hurt to get the EI, it's free right?

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
I think it is not a big deal. However-if you are being given the opportunity to help your child, I would take it. Your baby IS perfect. I would happily accept EI if my child was not doing what most other babies around her were....yes babies develop at their own pace but that could be a red flag that she needs some help.

My nephew never crawled..... NOthing.. nada... had no interest.
Started pulling to stand at around 14 months and walked at around 18 months...
DOn't worry Randi.....
All babies develop at their own pace.
I think it's WONDERFUL how many early intervention programs we have these days but sometime I think they make parents more frazzled then necessary....

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
I totally understand how this would make you upset - I would be the same way. Please don't worry! I think some ped's recommend EI's sometimes to make parents feel better and as a "just in case". Their thinking is probably, it is free, why not.
My friend went through something similar last year. Her one year old was not pulling up, crawling, or really trying to move at all. She mentioned her concern to the ped and he recommended an EI. She is totally fine! In fact, when she started walking, she wasn't really a wobbly walker, it's like she just took off one day. Now at 2 1/2 she is very cautious and careful.

DD rolled until 11 months. Then she started to crawl. She didn't walk until 14 months. I don't know if I'd be super concerned yet.

i totally agree! if it's free - take advantage of it and let the REAL PRO tell you she's fine! Think of how great that will feel!
i know dave's nephew had NO desire to crawl at all - he went from sitting, to scooting on his butt to standing & walking...

Randi, I honestly think nothing is wrong! My ped said crawling is not considerd a milestone....I never crawled and started walking at 13 months...DD started crawling at 7 months and at 12 months isn't walking yet, and have a feeling she won't start walking until 14-15 months....I really think she's fine, but def take advantage of EI, why not!!!

Crawling isn't a milestone. Not all babies crawl. I went straight to walking. I really wouldn't be concerned especially if she's meeting her milestones.

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
thanks everyone... I did put a call in, and now I have to wait to get a call back and go through a checklist, etc., and then we'll see about scheduling something.
we shall see-- honestly, I think I just need to schedule it, then she'll start moving the next day probably!

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
DD didn't crawl until after she walked at almost 16 months. She scooted on her tush around my house (hardwood floors) and sometimes army crawled.
She is perfectly fine and healthy. Now at 2 1/2 she runs faster than me.
Don't let the dr. make u nuts.

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
My DS was referred to EI for speech, but after I met with the service coordinator, he was also recommended to have a PT evaluation. He was approved for services for both.
My DS never really did a regular crawl, but he army crawled at about 11-12 months. My concern was that he wasn't picking himself up to a sitting position either at that time, which I thought he should be doing. He was always a big baby (at least 90th percentile for height and weight often 95th or higher) and we just figured it was hard for him to lift his own weight.
It is hard when someone suggests the eval, because you think there is something *wrong* with your beautiful child. I try to see it as you are doing everything you can to help them, and an evaluation, and services if they need it can only help.
My DS started PT at about 18 months and I will tell you that within a week we saw improvements. Our PT is wonderful with him and I am so happy we went ahead and got him the help.

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
My DS didn't crawl until the weekend of his first birthday. He walked when hewas 15 months old.
Is your ped older? Mine is (he was mine too) and he wanted DS to crawl.
That being said, kids tend to develop one thing at a time, and maybe she is developing another "milestone"

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
How old is she that he's worried about this?
My son gets speech services and it still is hard to hear that he is delayed in some part of development. I know that many peds don't even consider crawling a milestone so I wouldn't worry all that much - but it doesn't hurt to have someone from EI come in.
If anything it's someone (a professional nonetheless) who gets to play with your DD for 45 minutes. I always tried to see the positive to him getting services. And, if she doesn't qualify for anything think of how great that will be also!

My son didn't crawl until very late (I can't remember the exact time) and didn't walk until 15 months...and he is fine!
I didn't think they considered crawling a milestone either...my ped never even asked about it with dd

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
I actually think it's great that your ped. recommended an eval because I feel like too many peds. do the "wait and see", and babies that could have been getting help sooner miss out on a lot of time. Not to say that she needs EI, but the worst that can happen is that they come and she's perfectly fine and it just wasted a couple of hours of your time. And if she does need services, it will be great that you called and she'll get them.

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
Thanks-- my pediatrician I think is about my age-- she actually said today she got the chicken pox (we were talking about the vaccine) at age 12, and it was 21 years ago-- so, that actually makes her a year younger than me. She also has 3 kids and mentioned her third crawled late or didn't crawl-- and is now 2.5 and runs around, etc., and is totally fine.
She told me NOT to worry, but it doesn't hurt to get it check out. Which, I am sure is the case-- but just the fact that she needs to get checked out, even if it's just a precaution, is upsetting.
I will certainly be anxious to see her development over the next few weeks-- as she gets closer to her birthday, and it sounds that the eval will be an interesting experience anyway.
Sidenote-- she just grabbed the brush from DH and is actually trying to brush her own hair! So, at least she can do that!!

Re: Kinda upset... looking for advice from BTDT moms re: EI
ugh, Randi I hate that she made you feel like something was wrong. I don't think it's a big deal at ALL that sasha isn't crawling yet. Like everyone has said, they all go at their own pace. I'll tell you something, I remember when you posted a picture of Sasha and it was the first time she "found her toes". She was sitting in the bumbo and had them in her mouth. I remember thinking, crap..shane has no idea where has his feet are, and he didn't find them until waaay after Sasha did. I know not quite the same as crawling but I guess I'm trying to say that I'm sure she's adept at things that others her age aren't..i.e. shane would have no idea what to do with a brush if I put it in his hand even though I brush his hair everyday. Sasha is perfect and she'll be all over the place before you know it.

ITA! I think it is wonderful that your Ped is so proactive! I'm sure she is fine, but should she need services, it's great that she'll receive them early!!

randi, i wouldn't worry about this at all, although i can understand how it would have made you upset.
all babies develop at their own pace. she will crawl when she's ready... or maybe not at all. some babies never do.
don't let the playdate thing get to you. i have to say, that's the one thing i strongly dislike about those group playdates, even if it's with women I know and like. Put a group of mothers together and you get a lot of comparisons...

I agree too.. I'm a BTDT mom in this exact situation (gross motor delay)...while I agree with most that it isn't a milestone and not that uncommon to not crawl it also should be evaluated just to ensure that there isn't a larger issue (i.e. muscle tone).
Was it hard to accept that something *might* be wrong with your precious baby? Absolutely it was for me.
Good for you for making the call. I think it will really put your mind at ease. My son crawled two days before our in-home meeting (although he still did qualify).
