kindergarten homework question...amount?
I'm going from 6th grade to kindergarten this year. For those of you who teach kindergarten, just wondering how you implement homework. Do you give it nightly / weekly?

Re: kindergarten homework question...amount?
My friends who teach k most of them give a hw sheet for the week on monday but im pretty sure they place the hw sheets for eat night in the folders daily
I teach first and i give them a the hw sheet that states everything for the week and attach all the hw for the week (i make a packet) i find it helps me plan better and it is quicker to check. I save a lot of time not stuffing hw in their folders everyday bc i would often miss one or two folders

My dd is starting K in Sept. Her teacher told us that she does not assign homework. It's a 1/2 day program, not sure if that makes a difference.

I would say 2 tasks is enough ..... review from the days work - NO more than 15 minutes worth of work.

Are you in East Meadow? I am and I think we are the ONLY 1/2 day K left

No, Wantagh. There aren't many, but a few teachers have told me they think their districts are probably going to move back to 1/2 day next year or the year after for budget reasons since it's not state mandated and the easiest to change.

Re: kindergarten homework question...amount?
I teach K, and assign HW every night except Fridays. Usually it is a Math sheet and a Penmanship or Language Arts sheets. In addition the kids are supposed to read 20 min each night with a parent.
Believe it or not- the kids want more HW!

I'm in Levittown, we still have 1/2 day or what they call "extended" day.

Re: kindergarten homework question...amount?
when i taught kindergarten, i did a weekly packet. i was sent home on Mondays and had our poem of the week (to read with a parent each night), and our letter or sound of the week and sheets to go along with that (penmanship, findgin the letter, etc.) Also, a very basic math sheet (usually counting, patterns, etc.) Basically the packet corresponded with activities or centers we were doing that week. We had some parents very pro-homework in K and some very anti-homework. I left the packet up to the parents do with it what they wanted it. Some kids returned it, some didn't. I did not grade. I was not pro-homework in K. I don't think it's necessary, although they should be reading with a parent (or on their own) daily.

Harborfields, Northport and I think Kings Park are stilll half day. Elwood is semi half day (they offer half and extended day, b/c some parents didn't want their kids going more than half ) and Cold Spring Harbor is extended.
I also think many schools are going to go back to half day to save money.
