Kindergarten Moms

Today was Bella's first day of full day kindergarten. I teared up AGAIN at line-up because it just strikes me that she is such an individual now that doesn't rely on me so much re: everyday tasks. She does so much on her own now. Where did the time go???

Kindergarten is such a change from her full day pre-k/daycare...so much paperwork. Notes for PTA, notes for after school program, papers on allergies and approved snacks, calendars...

And as a working mom, what is up with all of the half days? "Superintendents Day" on 9/30 and a bunch more sprinkled throughout the year.

Plus I am missing the "Get Acquainted Day" at 2 pm on Wednesday. This was AFTER Kindergarten Tea last Wednesday Morning and BEFORE "Back To School" night next Wednesday....what more information do I need? I feel guilty missing it, but I took off last week with her first two days being half days....let the Working mom guilt commence.

How is everyone else doing?

Is your child in the before or after school prograM? In my district, the afterschool program is available on half days and conference days. Try not to feel guiltY, you will have to pick and choose what you can do, just like all the other mothers. I would ask the teacher what is really necessary for you to do. HOw about dd's father, can he go sometimes? YOu just don't want to miss something that will be obvious to your dd. GL

Re: Kindergarten Moms

Oh, I will check into that...THANKS!

My DH is a union carpenter, so from 6 am - 3pm, I am sort of on my own when he is working (and with work being up and down lately, he can't miss anything).

He is really involved, so he'll be at all the other functions Chat Icon

I just hate that this Get Acquainted Day falls in between an Orientation and Back To School...what else do I possibly need to know.

So far so good. It is a note a day from the administration or PTA which is funny. We have the New Parents Tea later this week, but most of the kids in her class have older siblings in the school so I wonder if I'll be the only one there. Chat Icon

Re: Kindergarten Moms

We are in week 2 and the afterschool program hasn't even hasn't even started at Nate's school yet. Last week, I pretty much worked remotely or left the office at 2pm to pick him up. This week luckily my ILs are doing the pick ups. Who knows what's going to happen next week.

I agree there's so much more to keep track of now. Nate is off Sept 24 for some teacher training day. Chicago public schools has at least 2 days off every month. I had to set up a separate calendar so my team would know the days I need to work from home or leave early. While I enjoy working, I really see why parents choose to SAH.

I know we just need to find our rhythm but I am just exhausted trying to juggle it all. I haven't made a real dinner in almost 2 weeks.

Re: Kindergarten Moms

I'm in awe of all the paperwork we receive every day! DS came home with a fundraising packet on his 2nd day of school...I was like "Wow, they just hop right to it!" Forms and various other things to sign, PTA notices, Upcoming events, etc. Then homework started yesterday. He came home with a big packet of homework that's due on Friday. I was surprised, but it sounds like it's the norm.

Oh, I feel you. DH and I were out of whack too. Thankfully her after school started on Monday, because we would have been screwed if we didn't.

She just got her first homework assignment last night that is due Friday (thank GOD, because last night I was exhausted)

I am in awe of the "reminders", changes, and paperwork that we have already received.

I am sad that I am missing "Get Acquainted" day today...but I seriously can't keep missing work to get the same information over and over again.

Daycare was such a breeze (I paid a lot of freaking money for it to be though, I know Chat Icon)

It's crazy, I have my own folder with paperwork from the school. We have to check a website daily to get Nate's homework and see if there are messages from the teacher. He has homework 3-4 times a week, a spelling test every Friday and a 'book' report due every Monday. The homework doesn't take 15 min either.

I know it sucks as a working parent to miss some events, but I'm sure they'll be other parents who may miss it also. If there's something different being mentioned, maybe ask the teacher to follow-up with an email on anything you (and other parents) might have missed

We have back to school night this evening, so it will be nice to meet other parents.

I have my own folder too! Hilarious Chat Icon They have a folder they fill with all their pertinent info we need to look at. DH waits until I get home at night to check it...which is lovely Chat Icon I have a binder clip where I clip appropriate notes to as well as her lunch order. The first clip didn't come home with her....so I sent in another asking that they send it home.

I also joined the PTA, which I am excited and nervous about. I had no parental involvement in my school, so I want to be involved for sure.

Not a K mom here but...you'll get a better sense of everything once you have Open House.

The notes home are insane, the fundraisers, the projects, etc. Our PTA has introduced Backpack Express where you are on an email list. It's helped a lot except I feel like I"m getting spammed to death the first week of school. If your PTA doesn't offer it, you may want to suggest it.

The Superintendent's & conference days killed all of the my vacation days. This year we lucked out with Yom Kippur on a Saturday. Although we dont have half days on our calendar (which seems very suspicious since they're always there)...two things you should be aware of as a working mom...

Halloween Parade - check if it's on your calendar or if your school does one. You will want to be there for that.

The last week of school is almost all half days (which aren't on the calendar) & the last day is like an hour.

You can also expect a few field trips - one fall, one spring, at minimum. Some have chaperones; some don't.
