Have you ever thought about having vents installed under the new cabinets so you can still put cabinets where the base board is? They could install ductwork so the heat would come out by the kick plate.

we actually did think about this too.. we were not sure how much that would run..

luckily we are going back thursday this week to design the kitchen again.. maybe we can do that option too

Do they want to put the sink in the corner were the fridge is now? I think I would move it down to create more counter space but not have a 'corner' sink, KWIM? I would just shift it down and leave yourself a small (3" or so) space between the wall and the sink. that will give you a nice size counter next to the stove. Chat Icon

i wish i had the first design they gave us..

but yea .. basically the corner would be where the fridge is now.. so if the sink remains where it is.. i would have the corner and then some from the L shape..

what do you mean move the fridge? move it where?

we have a cape and ours was next to the front window window and i loved it!! i would have loved to put built on cabinets over the fridge and below and to the right of the window!!! more cabinets in a levitt cape the better almost making it a galley kitchen instead of a basic levitt cape

i can't wait to see what you do with it!!

AHH i just found a pic of my kitchen now.. its terrible. so dont mind..

ok .. so the fridge would be moved to the corner on the other side.. by the side door..

how many cabinets do you have on the other side?
quite frankly- that's not that big of a kitchen- you can totally do a custom cabinet for not that much money- what do you have all told, like 12-15 feet of cabinets? or less? Probably around the same price as what you'd get at HD or Lowes... and some are doing free installs now- so that would save your DH the effort. A lot of the mom & pop shops are offering way more incentives now than the big boys to get the business.

You could probably do a custom made cabinet for like under $5k AND have the cabinets buillt for the baseboards. For your space, I'd want to maximize my utility as much as possible, making sure I had no fillers.

question- do you have a soffit above the uppers? IF you don't, I'd totally extend the uppers beyond 30" for storage.

and, looking at your space- I WOULD move the fridge and put the sink in the corner to maximize counter space.

I forgot you said the "L" shape. Can you put the sink on the "L" and then you can have full counter that swings around to the stove.

My biggest pet peeve at my place right now is there is hardly any counter next to my stove. It makes it hard to have a place to hold food either before it is cooked or right after. Especially if I am doing batches of cooking.

yea our kitchen is super small and all the cabinets you see in the pic is it! it is absolutely terrible.. no work space at all!

SO.. we got a quote for HD for 5K for all the cabinets.. BUT we are going back now to redesign it and see if we can get it lower..

yea the sink in our first design is in the L..

but now that you mentioned it.. its so true to have space next to the stove.. it makes it easier to work..

ahhhh.. this is so difficult!! haha

I would not move the refrigerator by the door. It will be awkward since the side door opens into the same space.

Re: Kitchen remodel question... WWYD..

just make sure the door opens to the right so that you can have the back door & the fridge door open @ the same time.

Re: Kitchen remodel question... WWYD..

I would definitely move the fridge and I would put the sink in the corner....since where it is right now isn't looking out a window, I don't think it would be a big deal to move it. It looks like you have some soffit space you can reclaim, then you can order taller wall cabinets which is what we did. maybe you can create a little breakfast nook with an extended countertop by the fridge? we did an L shaped countertop but didn't continue the cabinets all the way around, just the countertop and put stools underneath (of course the counter then costs more). good luck with your decision!
