Re: Ladies with PCOS - a little update 8/5
Thanks to both of you
Yep, I thought of waiting until after the cruise..and I thought of starting tomorrow so I have 2 weeks to "get used to it"....
I don't know what to do
I'll be a little pissy if I can't have a melon colada or 2

UPDATE 8/5/08
Thanks for the support/advice.
Results today....good news, I guess. Fortunately, this was "caught" while I'm young and have better chances of correcting it through lifestyle changes and medications. And my major concern - the ability make babies! - will hopefully not be too difficult with the help of Clomid.
I was given a script for 1500mg of Glucophage XR (750mg/day for the first 2 weeks to ease myself into it with less GI issues). From what I've read, it seems to restore menstruation in most women...restore ovulation in SOME (according to the dr, about 30%).
I'll step up the exercise and go easier on the carbs and we'll see how this goes. I'll go back to the RE in about 8 weeks to check in.
2 questions:
1) I was told the Glucophage XR (metformin extended release) can cause sporadic ovulation - has anyone experienced this?
AND
2) I'm going on a cruise in 2 weeks. I'm concerned that the meds will upset my stomach and ruin my fun! I'm not a huge drinker, but I will definitely indulge in 1 frozen drink a day. I'm concerned that the rich food and alcohol will exacerbate the side effects of the meds (GI issues). Does anyone have any experience with this?
THANK YOUUUUU
The metformin should assist in helping the weight loss. I know it doesn't for everyone, but it did for me after years of not being albe to lose weight.
To answer your questions:
1. I've heard the extended release is actually easier on your stomach. I wasn't on it, so I'm unsure of the spontaneous ovulation thing. But Met in and of itself has been known to help regulate the cycles of women with PCOS.
2. As far as the cruise goes, my experience with Met was indulging in anything decadent (aka, any type of desserts) was a big NO, NO for me! It really upset my stomach and got me running for the bathroom. I'm also not a big drinker, but while I was on Met, and I had a drink, I would get awful headaches. (but I still wouldn't turn down a cocktail because of it!) I think SweetTooth (Lauren) was on the extended release, you may want to FM her and ask how she did with it
Have fun on your cruise! I'm jealous!!!!
ETA: I didn't read the other responses and didn't realize Lauren already responded!

Thank you
I may wait until we get back on 8/23. It's actually less than 3 weeks away...shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Is anyone else completely anovulatory? What got you going?

1) I was told the Glucophage XR (metformin extended release) can cause sporadic ovulation - has anyone experienced this? I was never on Glucophage, but have read and heard the same thing. Some people even become completely regulated with Glucophage.
Be careful. A lot of people have stomach issues on Glucophage - I know my mother did. You should be careful about what you eat (I don't think the frozen drinks will affect you much) because rich food does seem to have an adverse affect.
Glad to hear you are addressing the issue now and hopefully, you will have no problem getting PG when you want to.

I don't ovulate at all - maybe once or twice a year. I was on met alone for 3 months and it didn't do anything for me. Clomid is what got me to ovulate, although it did take about 5-6 months of playing with dosages to find what worked for me.
I switched to the ER very late in the game, but I did noticed it lessened the stomach issues a little. I also have IBS so it just aggravated it.
If you decide to start it before your cruise, definitely take a supply of immodiium with you.

I appreciate the BTDT advice so much.... I think (and DH agrees) that I will wait until we get back from the trip.
it'll be a "last hurrah" of sorts

Re: Ladies with PCOS - a little update 8/5
Start after the cruise.
With metformin, synthroid and a 20 lb weight loss, I started ovulating and having regular periods.
I can't have more than one drink per night and I seem to have very bad effects after eating too much dairy and meat. It took me a solid three months to get used to met.

I am. Unfortunately, the Met did not help regulate my cycles and did not help me ovulate. However, even though I'm pregnant now, I'm still on it because I am insulin-resistant and they want to prevent me from getting gestational diabetes.
For me, I didn't have any side effects from the Met--but I think I'm in the minority. I'm on the 750 extended release as well--but they had me start with one pill a day for a week, and then I started 2 the following week. It didn't matter what I ate, the Met didn't bother me. It also didn't help me drop ANY weight.
I hope it works out for you. Let us know the results of your glucose tolerance test!
