Normally, I would have felt bad............but the fact that she gave you a wrong number......TWICE..........no sympathy after that.
IMO, she was trying to get away with a fast one.

You definitely did the right thing.
The only thing I don't understand is how she backed into you. Did the front of your car make contact with her rear bumper? Because then it will be very difficult to prove it was her fault (and she seems like a b!+ch claiming she didn't do any of the damage when she damn well knew she did). But maybe I'm just not understanding your description.
Either way, it was good that YOU called the cops because it seems more likely that you were NOT the one at fault if you were the one alerting the police. She knew you wanted to call the police. I'm sure most people would never even consider leaving the scene of an accident that was their fault. She's a B, plain and simple. She'll hopefully get what she deserves.
Accidents suck. I hope your day gets better.
The woman saw a spot opening up next to her so she backed up without looking behind her and smashed Caroline.
Hopefully with all the evidence Caz was able to get (pics, numbers, police report, woman calling her back later) the woman's insurance will cover it.
Exactly. We were in traffic on a side street in queens and someone to the left was leaving a spot...she just started backing up to get the spot, didn't even look to see if someone was behind her.

Re: Leaving the scene of an accident - WWYD
This actually happened to me.
I was in NY maybe a full year or less? In Kew Gardens Queens. Coming home in the car with my now hubby. There's a short stop for a light on Lefferts & Austin cause buses make wide rights. A car pulled all the way up the light. We stopped back at the line with even MORE space for her to back up if she needed to. A bus came around and she backed up.. ALL the way back INTO our car.
Jumps out, so sorry, blah blah, my fault, blah blah.. but OH NO its a jewish holiday ... I must be home by dusk. Um? being still relatively new to NY and not generally one to mess with other religions .. i was lost. She wrote us a note, said it was her fault, gave us her insurance company number, policy number too. ETA: She tells us she's jewish which was her excuse for not staying (just thought I'd clarify)
Dont ya know?
She told her insurance company that WE rear ended HER!
Stupid wench. $2000 in damage to the front end of our car and she had the nerve to say we owed her for hers! She & I took the same LIRR to Kew and I swear I'd say nasty mean things to her when ever she was near. She started to hide from me, brought a different car to the station, which I walked up to her with my friends (who knew what happened) and said "You think driving another car is going to fool me?" grrr.
Unfortunately a few months later my hubby's car was stolen and then a few months from then he got a ticket for going 5 mph over on Queens Blvd during the ticket blitz. Instead of fighting it, he paid. His insurance dropped him and he went into high risk due to that DAMNED accident, stolen car and ticket. The accident was they said the key since it was 'at fault'.
I hope karma eats her up and spits her out a new arse!
Sorry this happened to you and man do I feel your pain. You did the right thing!
ALWAYS call the COPS! 15-30mins out of your day can save you SOOOOO Much more time in hassle and aggravation!!!!!
ETA: clarification

Re: Leaving the scene of an accident - WWYD
This reminds me of something that happened on my way home from work a year ago just ONE DAY after we leased our new car!
I was in stop and go traffic and the girl behind me went right into me! We both got out at the exit and she was practically BEGGING me to not call the cops and said she would just give me money. I refused and insisted that we call the cops. It was my first day driving that car and saw it go from PERFECT to getting a massive dent on the rear bumper! While we were waiting for the cops to arrive, her mother showed up and lectured me about not getting the police involved, and told me I would be sorry because MY insurance would go up too (even though it was 100% her daughter's fault) She said she would give me $1000 to cover the damages. Well, I still held out for the cops.
In the end, she caused about $2500 in damages, which was completely paid for by her insurance and mine didn't go up AT ALL .. an the kicker is she was 17 and just go her license 5 months prior to that accident.
UGh
ETA: I want to add I ended up waiting nearly 2 hours for the cops to show up. Apparently I called during a shift change! Although I think what really happened was in Brooklyn of all places, my accident was pretty low on their priority list compared to other calls they probably get....

Uggh just what you needed this week C, sorry Glad you're OK and glad you had the presence of mind to try her FAKE #s right then and there, that was super-smart and I give you an "A"
There's no reason for her to be calling you at ALL today so I'd let her go to v-mail frankly. She was ready to scoot and gave you false info so she deserves to be dealing with the NYPD instead of you right now!!!!

The only way I don't call the cops is if the other party hands me a stack of Benjamins at the scene.
Ditto. I don't chance it otherwise.
You did the right thing.

Re: Leaving the scene of an accident - WWYD
Someone hit me once at a light - we agreed to pull over - she did. We got out of our cars to exchange info (or so I thought) - she didn't want to (forgot what her reason was). I told her if she left, I would call the police. Well, she left and I called the police.
Before I got out of my car, I wrote down her plate and make of car.
It was enough for the cops. She lived a few blocks away. The cops traced her plate and knocked on her door.
Turns out she had suspended license. The cop gave her a bunch of other tickets to add to her collection.
The police report came back that the accident was my fault - so I didn't pursue damages (I had an older car, not really damages, just deep scratches).
A few weeks go by - the Assistant DA calls me at work (totally flips me out) - asks me for my side of the story. Tells me to get an estimate and fax it to him (done).
Another few weeks later - I get a check in the mail from her attny's escrow account for the damages
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glad you are okay - hope there isn't too much damage to your car.

woah.... why did the police report come back as YOUR FAULT????
Do I have to worry about this?
It is kinda hard to prove she backed INTO me... (but she did )
the way she seemed, I could totally see her turning this around on me....

Yeah, but she left and you stayed and called the cops. Would you do that if you were at fault? Would she give you two fake numbers if you were at fault? She made herself look sketchy....which works in your favor!

The problem is that she could say that you rear-ended her and she was just in a hurry and didn't have any real damage so she wanted to forget it. The fake #'s - well its hard to really prove they are "fake" and that YOU didn't just imput them into your phone wrong and it was a simple mistake.
I hope everything works out. She did leave the scene. But she also seems like the kind of woman who will call her insurance co and tell them you hit her when she realizes you have no proof. She will need to admit it, thats the only way you can prove it. Maybe she did verbally admit something to the police when they called her. Just wanted to give you other possibilities so you can be prepared for them. Sorry.

From what I understand (my DH works for a major auto insurance company) they can determine who is at fault by the way your car was hit or the damage done to your car.
Also, with her leaving and giving you 2 wrong numbers its your honest word against her dishonest word. If she fights you on it, your insurance company's lawyers will fight tooth and nail.
