Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
The cards have started arriving, and I've received two with letters so far.
How do you feel about the letters?

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
I don't know...the ones I get are from people/relatives that I never even speak to...and I can't help but think all it is is just a letter that says Look at us and all the wonderful things we did this year...and yes, actually we do look forward to it each year just to make fun...it's a good laugh...

we get a good laugh at them too. We read them 'dramatically' when we recieve them...sometimes they are SOO good, and everything is going SO well for a family, it makes me wonder what they are trying to hide

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
i dont really get them since we see most of the people we send to......
i think its nice for people you dont really keep in touch with as much... MIL wrote in hers to some people how she is expecting to be a grandma for the first time in may....
my mother- she writes letters, very honest...one letter included how someone was laid off, another persons health issues. the complete opposite of everything is wonderful- although she did manage to find some positive things over the year to include.

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
Here's an outline of the one I received today. It was two pages long and printed on multi-color snowflake paper.
Paragraph #1 - We love our life!
Paragraph #2 - DH's job is fantastic! And, he has lots of hobbies!
Paragraph #3 - DW's a SAHM ("paid in
and ), lost all of her 3rd baby weight in a few months and does tons of class parent activities!
Paragraphs #4 - 6 - DS #1 is the best student in the entire elementary school, DD and DS #2 are likely to be just as brilliant; the kids participate in tennis, golf, baseball, soccer, swimming, gymnastics, art, cub scouts and piano
Paragraph #7 - We went on lots of vacations in different areas of the country!
Paragraph #8 - It's not all rainbows; two family members passed away. And, we're going on another family vacation over Christmas.
***** I can't deal. My "letter" would be a postcard...same s***, different day.

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
I like the ones that are an honest recap of what the family has done over the year.
Not so into the ones that are just bragging about new possessions or all the fab trips they've taken.

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
hate to say it, I find them to be terribly impersonal and often rather self-absorbed.
IMO, a holiday card should be expressing thoughts to the receiver, not yapping on about yourself, printing out a couple dozen copies, and mailing them out without any personal note to the recipient.
sorry... but this is my unfiltered opinion of those letters

Well I love them because they tell me all kinds of stuff that happened that I didn't know! Of course they're going to be upbeat and have a happy tone.
I don't send one though... I'm still included in my mom's!

If I did one of those letters and sent it out and wrote that about me.....my family would have a field day making fun of me.

I picked other.
I have never received one, and I have never sent one. Actually I've never even seen one!
Pretty sure I only knew they existed because of an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
I voted other. Some I like, some I laugh at. I lived in another part of the country for a long time and don't talk to those friends often, so I will usually enclose a letter to those particular people, but not to everyone on the Christmas card list. I am usually pretty honest - it's just to let them know what is going on with us, not to brag or blather on incessantly.
We receive a couple from people that is a full page of rhyming verses. Those are a bit much, IMO.

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
There is one that has been the centerpiece of our family Christmas dinners at my parent's house for YEARS! Their neighbor does a 4-5 page letter about his life, his family(he has two grown kids), his cats, his health, etc. He is the local community activist who no one can deal with but his Christmas letter is to DIE over! It makes us(and other families around town- I have walked in on them laughing over it)

I think they're weird when they're like the resume for the family or something...why do we need to your entire life?

Re: Let's talk about Christmas (er...holiday) letters!
i hate them when people brag about their great job and great kids and fabulous life in them. i do however have a lot of family over seas and I love receiving letters from them that gives me little updates i wouldn't have known otherwise. it's a quick way to keep in touch a little better. i send a non-bragging one to overseas relatives because it's just easier than writing 12 individual letters.
