Lets talk Nassau School Districts

You all were so helpfull with Nassau towns biut not that I am searching Im finding all different SDs in one area. Like Rockville Centre for example can be in Malverne SD or Rock Centre SD. I hear Malverne is not so great. What are the good SDs in Nassau?

Re: Lets talk Nassau School Districts

It's sort of subjective for most school districts. If you want school districts listed that everyone will agree are great, those are towns that usually are very expensive to live in such as:

Garden City
Rockville Centre
Herricks
Old Westbury/East Williston
Manhasset
Jericho
Syosset

I agree with all of these. Great Neck is also good.

North Merrick and North Bellmore are OK but not as nice as Merrick and Bellmore, although they combine differently for middle school and HS

I'd say better to go with the South ones if you can afford it so your kids can end up at JFK high school if you're looking long term

ditto East Meadow. The district has a great rep IMO

eta: What makes a SD "good" is subjective. What are you loking for in a district?

I have to disagree with this. I live in North Merrick, but I don't have kids yet. I went to high school in North Bellmore (Mepham) and it was a great school. I knew kids who went to Kennedy and knew when I got older that I wouldn't want my kids to go there. But that's just my opinion. I find North Merrick and North Bellmore are more grounded and they are great schools. You wouldnt go wrong. I'm zoned for Camp Avenue Elementary, Merrick Avenue Middle School and Calhoun HS.

I disagree too. I grew up in these areas and am very familiar with all the schools in the district. I would have to say I prefer North Bellmore/North Merrick.

I would go to the schools and do some research on your own.

This site can be very biased when it comes to SD's and what people define as good or bad.

We are in the Malverne SD and have different opinions then others doChat Icon

My point is more that the OP would need to ask about a specific district or town she is interested in b/c even if people name "great" districts, it's sort of pointless unless the OP can afford a house in those districts. Also, every district will have varying opinions b.c it's a subjective topic.

I agree. Take the suggestions on this site and do your own comparisons and visit schools.

Re: Lets talk Nassau School Districts

I do agree that everyone will have different opinions on the SD's in Nassau & even Suffolk...You can do a lot of research online & even through MLSLI.com

For us, we wanted either
Levittown
Wantagh
Seaford
Massapequa

We ended up buying in Wantagh but Levittown schools (Salk/MacArthur)

I grew up in South Bellmore and went to Kennedy so I'm probably biased.... but my mom grew up in North Bellmore and went to Mepham. She made an effort to buy a house in South Bellmore that would be zoned for Kennedy.

it's also possible that things have changed over time

I have to agree. I went to N Bellmore schools and would not want my kids to go to Kennedy. The schools in N bellmore are more grounded. I live in The Old Britton Estates area, and have to say it is a very nice desirable area, there are really nice areas of N Bellmore and N Merrick. The schools are great. JMHO.Chat Icon

Re: Lets talk Nassau School Districts

Look into Lynbrook.. I bought my home based on that SD.. It is excellent.. From the elementary all the way up to HS.. I live in E. Rockaway but I insisted on having SD #20.. E Rockaway is not a good one at all.. Biut my 2nd choice would be Rockville Centre/3rd Garden City!! Are you in this area now??

I teach in the Lynbrook School District and i can't express how wonderful of a staff i work with...Lynbrook is one big family! The school district is great, the community is great! Definitely a town you should look into....many of the teachers in the district live in Lynbrook...that says a lot!

I live in North Merrick.....another great town. I've heard great things about the school district.

DH and I love Lynbrook. We bought our house here before TTC because we knew we wanted our children to go in this school district. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about Lynbrook schools (elementary through high school) and the houses are cheaper compared to other towns with good schools.

Re: Lets talk Nassau School Districts

We zoned in on Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh and Massapequa. We ended up in South Bellmore- my kids will go to Kennedy if we are still in LI. DH went to Kennedy (yes, we are 4 blocks from the in laws Chat Icon ). He had said when he was going, which was in the 90's, Kennedy was preferred over Mepham and Calhoun. But that was awhile ago, things very well may have changed. Wantagh has blue ribbon schools of excellence. We really wanted to buy there, but found nothing we were in love with.
