Let's talk work ethic...

As I read through these boards and as I have conversations with people IRL, I find that very few things in this world actually offend me. I'm very laid back and I don't consider myself uptight, but consistently, over and over again, I'm extremely offended by people who don't have a good work ethic. I don't know why I take it so personally when other people don't work hard, but I do. I'm sure there are a gazillion reasons why someone wouldn't work hard at anything in life, but for me, when I see people just dragging azz through life and just being a lump, it offends me. It's like, ok, so the rest of us should be busting our azzes while you just sit around and do nothing or do it halfassed? Whatever. It annoys me.
That being said, do you have a good work ethic? I promise not to hold it against you if you don'tChat Icon

Re: Let's talk work ethic...

I definitely have a good work ethic. I work hard, take my job seriously and never expect anyone else to do my work. Sometimes, I work TOO hard when others don't.

I definately do. Hard work pays off. Chat Icon

What I hate is getting told I dont have the degree to do a job I have done flawlessly for 3 months so they are going to put a degreed person in that position and in the end I'm cleaning their mistakes. Good work ethic went out the door and I told them to shove it

Re: Let's talk work ethic...

I think I do. Except at the end of my last job. I did not care.

Slacking is relative though. You will always find someone who will work more than you (does that make you a slacker?) and someone who will work less than you. It's all in perspective to you.

Re: Let's talk work ethic...

I think I do and I think I was raised that way.
Right now, I have 2 jobs (plus side-stuff) and I always put 110% into what I do. I take pride in what I do, and that is key.
In my previous job, there were people who were the same age as me working line jobs while I was in Upper Management.
They were okay with their minimum wage jobs because it meant they didn't have responsibility and they didn't have to work at night/weekends when going to the clubs and hanging with friends was more important than a "decent" job.

I believe whatever you put into a job will one day pay off in the end.

No, really, I am the type of personality that works in spurts. I can work VERY intensly on something for 2 days, and do the same amount of work that would take someone else in my department 2 weeks, with better quality. But, once I'm done, I'm done - I need a few days to zone out and regroup, so during my "zone-out" days it may appear that I have literally no work ethic.

I find the results of your poll interesting.
Most posters here figure themselvs to have a good work ethic when most people who post here do so when they should be working.

Funny you should mention this, because I think the same thing.....there are a number of people who post a TON during the day, and I'm like, what do they do at work? How in the world do they have so much time to post?

I have a pretty good work ethic. Right now I'm a bit of a slacker, but it's not my fault; there isn't a whole lot of work for me to do. I'd much rather be slammed at work than be bored all day.

I had my first job at 12 (Daily News delivery - ugh!) and haven't stopped working since. During college, I somehow managed to hold 3 part time jobs while going to school full time!

As of now, I am a SAHM and I post during the day during nap time or if DS is sitting right with me playing nicely.

When I did work, I worked hard!!
I worked both a FT and a PT job up until 9 months pregnant. Only called in ONCE during the whole pregnancy because of a stomach virus.
No matter how tired I was, I dragged my butt in.
I was a day care teacher, meaning, I was pretty much sitting and standing all day long. Then was a PT tutor (where I was so happy to sit for the 2-3 hours a night) LOL.
I started out working in McDonalds and within 2 years, I was made store manager. Pretty good for a 19/20 year old. All of my friends couldn't wait to turn 21, me, I honestly didn't care at all...I was still working days, nights, and weekends.

See now, I don't necessarily think that slacking is relative. There's basic requirements for a job. Not even meeting those basic requirements is slacking. I don't think that's relative to what I do at all. While I understand what you're saying, I get annoyed by people who literally do nothing or less than the bare minimum. KWIM?

I have a great work ethic--I take my job seriously and enjoy what I am doing! IN my last job, I gave my 2 weeks notice, and my last day there, stayed an xtra hour to finish cleaning up my work!Chat Icon

My review this year was very good, but a bit confusing...positives were...will take on anything with ease...

negatives were, takes on extra work...

Re: Let's talk work ethic...

I have great work ethic even when im not working Chat Icon

Well I consider running the household and raising the kids "working" in some way! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Im CONSTANLTY on the go, mentally and physically (we dont need to get into the mentally part Chat Icon)

I have lists and spreadsheets and notes for every "to do" thought that pops into my head.
my errand runs are well organized and thought out.

As far as at work. yes, I have a high work ethic there as well.
and to be honest, depending on the bosses Ive had, Ive slacked BIG TIME when I had terrible bosses. I did just the bare minimum, left when the clock hit time, and collected my pay check.
(quit that job real quick, thats just not ME to live that way.)

and Ive had bosses where I worked my TUSH off, worked weekends, and nites till wee hours with no extra pay.
I worked above and beyond my own standards and learned so much from that job too. so it was a win win.
She appreciated all of our hard work, and many times REFUSED to have us still there past a certain time.

As far as work ethic and saving, my siblings and I have always been taught to save well and spend wisely.
so we were very greatful for those teachings when we got older and DID have nice savings of our own earned money.

now work and all related ethics combined, we all have had lazy days and days we chat on the phone/email, take a long lunch, and surf the net Chat Icon

That's an excellent point.

Although, having work ethic & being easily distracted are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

I'm kind of like Beth. My work ethic comes & goes. I was super efficient & conscientious when I first started here, 9 years ago, but there was a period of a few years when things were were bad, and it think I just gave up. Chat Icon

Now, I again have a sense of responsibility a desire to get it all done, but I do lack focus at times, especially when overwhelmed, but I never think, "oh well, let somebody else do that", or "hey, what can I get away with today?"

I even put my lack of focus to work, by volunteering to assemble & disassemble the holiday decor.! Chat Icon

I always wonder the same thing!!!

i have a really strong work ethic- i have since i was 13- i STILL hate the idea of calling in sick b/c i think it reflects negatively on me, so i avoid it at all costs.

I work in a similar style. Although even in my zone out days, I'm still on con calls.

As for posting during the day, I think there is a difference in multitasking.

For example, today I was on a con call with a VP for 2 hours & 17 minutes. The VP had to work through it on the phone...slowly, long drawn out, etc. In fact EVERY time this VP calls me, I told my boss that the image I get in my mind is from airplane when Robert Hayes is droning on about his tramautic time & the lady next to him hangs herself because she can't stand listenign to him. I'm not in the position where I could blow him off but I'm definitley in a situation where I can miss literally 2 hours of the conversation & get the gist of it. After the call I typed up a 4 line email to my boss solving the issue. We have 1-2 days a month that are all day con calls.

Just as my personal posting time leaks into my work day, my work day leaks into my nights, my days off & whenever I'm needed. So I would say that I do have a good work ethic. I do my job & many others that aren't my job.

My old boss broke down work ethic as there are people that will walk by the piece of paper on the floor & there are people who will pick up the paper, find out where it belongs & get it there.

Re: Let's talk work ethic...

I just had this conversation with my dad and a friend tonight about a 3rd party. I am constantly surprised by people who just don't have good work ethic. The person we were speaking of does not do the basics like return client calls. I mean, how do you run a business like thatChat Icon

As for me, my work ethic is possibly too good. I take ownership of anything I am asked to do which is to my own detriment. I have many times just done someone else's job since they were not getting it done fast enough for me. I hate having to rely on others to get my job done so I go around them often. I have been praised by colleagues for getting things done for them even when they ask me to do things that they know are not my responsibility. I am slowly getting away from this now though since I have 2 super slackers in the office and 1 other that sits OOT. I refuse to pick up their slack since they have higher pay grades than me and one has an assistant that can help out.

I have been working since age 8 and my SSI statement even lists me income from that year Chat Icon
