Re: Let's talk work ethic...
I'm always surprised too by how many people have enough "free time" at work to post here often. I'm on in the am before work, occassionally if my patient cancels & I don't have a million other things to do I might log on here for a few minutes but even then I rarely have time to post. Even if all day internet usage was "allowed" at my job I'd feel like I was slacking if I were socializing online most of the day.

Re: Let's talk work ethic...
I know I do....I rarely call in sick - do above and beyond what I need to do - and always get raises when I don't ask for them.... I agree about people posting while at work. I rarely have the time to do so, unless I'm waiting for the computer to do something else (our work comp. is really slow) and pop on here for a few minutes while waiting. Most of my posting is done before or after work.
But, at the same time - I don't think you are going to get many people to say they don't have a good work ethic. Most people believe they do have a good work ethic, even if they do the bare minimum to get by.

I agree with this. I doubt many people think they have a poor work ethic, even when they do the minimum (or less), though in career posts there are plenty of people who say they couldn't care less about their jobs and dream of never working again.
I love my job so I work hard. My work somewhat goes in spurts though, where I have down times, and times where I am working 12-15 hours a day during busy season. I work full-time, teach 2 MBA classes a semester, and am completing my doctoral dissertation. I haven't called in sick to work in the past year, and have used only 3 vacation days. I work hard.
But one of my friends who is a superintendant once told me he was asked in an interview if he would be willing to work on weekends and late nights...And he replied that he wouldn't, but he would be smart enough in his approach to the work that he would not be forced to work weekends and late nights. And that is what I aim to achieve...Work smarter.

Re: Let's talk work ethic...
I did until I worked for the Federal gov't. Then I realized you can get by easily half-@ssing things and enjoying life more.
Isn't that terrible? In college I had like 4 jobs and couldn't imagine NOT working hard in life!

Re: Let's talk work ethic...
I have a decent work ethic - I do my job to the best of my abilities. I make sure I meet all deadlines and continually find ways to learn more or improve my efficiency. But my heart isn't in it anymore it's become more of a paycheck.
Yes, I spend time online or on the phone while I am in the office (like now) but it doesn't get in the way of what needs to get done and I will stay later or bring work home to insure that it does.

Re: Let's talk work ethic...
I have always had a strong work ethic and have worked since I was 12. Like others have said, i work in spurts. If I have a project I just sit down and get it done, even if it doesnt have to be done right away. Then I am sometimes left with down time where I dont know what to do - until I had internet at work. Now my current job is too much down time and I dont like that - I am looking for a new job. I like to feel productive throughout my day.

Re: Let's talk work ethic...
Sorry to bump this but I wanted to get my 2 cents in regardless if anyone reads it or not.
I am never one to brag and I have very low self esteem but I know I have a very high work ethic. I work hard and give 100% everyday no matter what is going on in my personal life and no matter what other office politics are going on that might deter me. I NEVER call in sick and I do my best to help anyone and do everything I possibly can regardless of if its in my job description or not.
What pains me is that there are people that do everything half azzzed and they are still able to coast through for whatever reason.
Problem is, this work ethic really has not gotten me anywhere within my company! But I continue to pride myself on a high work ethic because that is the way I was raised and thats just me.
On the other note, I never understood how some people on these boards can be on here literally allll day, or almost at least, and say that they have a FT job. When I post during the day its usually only for a few minutes at a time IF at all and I could never have the time to post something this long.

I love my job so I work hard.
I used to think that i would ALWAYS want to work.. that i've worked so hard and have gone to school forever. Honestly, if the opportunity arose of never having to work again, i don't think i would be so quick to dismiss it. The thing about a work ethic, imo, is that you work your butt off- go above and beyond- despite your personal feelings about what the job entails. I don't have a strong work ethic b/c i'm so in love with my job, but because that is a reflection of my character and sense of respinsibility. My productivity every month is around 150-170%. the minimum is 80%. But, if i hit lotto and never had to work again, well, then i could tell you what that 170% would mean to me Still, until my last day, i would work my butt off, because that's what i've always done.

Re: Let's talk work ethic...
I have been Raised to have Very Good Work Ethic. Both my Grandfather & Parents work/ed very Hard in what ever they did.
I am a person who puts All into her Work. I am a Team Player who looks out for others. I believe Team Work, Communication, Respect, Hard Work, and Trust makes a Good Working Environement...(plus some others...)
I get upset when people are Skells and just breeze their way through a Tour.
I get upset to hear "That is not my Job, I am not doing that"
I get upset when people see they are working with me, & know that they have an Easy Day b/c I am a Good/Hard Worker who will Pick up the Slack of others just to make sure her whole Team doesn't Drown.
Sorry to make this into sort of a Vent
