yes, i do.

I do too. We have a million windows and i usually watch while folding laundry or cooking dinner. Both him and the dog.

Having a backyard fenced in is a beautiful thing! Chat Icon

I don't have a fenced in yard...but I go to friends' houses often, kids play in yards while we are inside.

Depending on what was in the backyard, yes.

My answer changes to no depending on what type of fence, shed, pool, pond, or animal is in the backyard.

No, our yard is fenced in, but I don't like her out there by herself.

Re: letting 3yo play in the backyard alone

Nope.

I have a chair and I sit back there with a book and Pandora blaring through the kitchen window. I keep some water nearby.

I just figure I'd rather be back there than hating myself if she got hurt. If she falls and its a bad fall, I just sorta let it go like "Hey it happens" but if I don't SEE it happen I feel like such an @ss! So I'd rather be back there.

I'm very comfortable with the idea that nothing gets done with I'm alone with her. No chores, no adult stuff. Its all just her. I can split it up when the hub gets home. He'll usually walk in the back, get a good hug, go in and change, do something inside, then grab a Tea, let me go in for a bit then we drag her in with bribes. Kid will stay out until she's toast if we let her! Chat Icon

Wow I wonder if I'd feel different if I still lived in NY.
I live in a quiet neighborhood. Our yard is fenced in but the gates aren't bolted. I don't really worry about someone snatching my kid. We don't back up to anyone but neighbors.
I will cook, throw in some laundry, sit at the kitchen table, etc.
I can see and/or here my kids out there so I really don't worry. If they fall and get hurt I'll hear the crying that ensues so I don't worry I wouldn't be around to help.
Now ask me if I'd let them ride there bike somewhere at 10....that's a tough one.

DD is 2.5 and I will run in to make the baby a bottle or grab a drink quick.

She doesnt like be out there alone so she usually follows and sits right by the door till I get back.

I live in NY and it's the same thing where i am. Quiet neighborhood, no neighbors nearing our property and there is nothing outside that he can hurt himself on (except his toys). I'm always in the dining room and kitchen which look out into the back yard. There are 9 windows, so i have plenty of ways to keep an eye on him. Chat Icon

Re: letting 3yo play in the backyard alone

I let my 1 yo (who is now 2) stay out there alone. I have sliding doors that overlook the back, windows in the kitchen, windows in the living room....Sometimes he doesn't want to come inside so I watch him from inside until he's ready. No harm. We have all the dangerous stuff locked up in the shed, so the only stuff out of it are his toys and swingset.

I do but not without checking on him literally every 10-15 minutes. We do have a fenced in yard. If I didnt have a fenced in yard then I wouldnt.

Re: letting 3yo play in the backyard alone

NO WAY!

Not until the kid was MUCH older.

When I was home on maternity leave, I saw BOTH a fox & coyote strolling through my backyard (yes, we have a fence). Been living in my house for 3 years now... it was the ONLY time I ever saw anything other than a rabbit.

We do NOT live in the boondocks... we just have a park & golf course a few blocks away.

It just isn't worth it.

Re: letting 3yo play in the backyard alone

I would.. I can't now only because ds is only 15 months and all I have is a door to look out and see.. If I had your kind of layout where you can see your dc then I would when ds is 3 yrs old.

Re: letting 3yo play in the backyard alone

If I had windows that allowed me to see to my backyard, yes but it also depends on what is back there. It actually annoys me that I can't see my backyard from my house unless I'm in my bedroom! I would love to be able to run in to get him lunch or fold laundry real quick.

Pool- no way would he ever be out there alone, no matter what the season.
