Level 1 sex offender
Recently found out someone we are friends with is registered as a level 1 offender. But the internet didn't state what this person did nor what actions constitute that offense.
Also... Would you end this friendship if you learned this? Our kids are friends, we are social together.

i wouldn't end a friendship over a level 1- i think you have to register for like 20 years so who knows what it was. Could be something like dating a 16 year old when you're 19 and now it's attached to you for 20 years

I would ask them what they did, then evaluate it. If they peed on a building at 18 I would still be their friend. If they mollested someone I would not.

When was the offense? Usually you can google search and find out more info? Depends on what the offense was but I likely wouldn’t let me children over the house. Does the spouse know? How did you find out the info?

Apparently, Level 1 offenders don't have the offense listed. And Google doesn't say what possibly offenses could be level 1.
A mutual friend told us.
How would their spouse NOT know? My husband asked that too but it was supposedly a few years ago.
I told dh that he should talk to him and ask him for his side of the story.

I would try to find out more information before making any decision. Level one means low risk of it happening again. So i would try to find out or just come out and say that you found out and wanted to know why

Does anyone know what kind of crime would be committed to be level 1?. I can't imagine it would involve children. I mean, I have seen this person at school events!

I've *heard* that it could be something as simple as public urination. It sucks because there's NO way to find out more info without directly asking them.

But how is public urination a "sex" offense?

I guess because you're exposing yourself in public? I'm not 100% sure if this is true, but I've heard it a few times before.

I’ve heard this, too.
To the OP, I would do nothing. He’s your friend and he is clearly capable of being around children. IMO, this is a MYOB situation. I wouldn’t let this affect a friendship.

Prior to this knowledge did you trust and like this person? Did you feel comfortable around them? Did this knowledge change your perception or the way you feel?

Yes, I was comfortable. I never got a creepy vibe or anything else.
It does change my perception a bit. You never really know someone, lol. but we don't think we are going to drop them but maybe not leave the kids with them. We'll still do things socially.
I am very curious WHAT he did though.

I will say that a Google search didn't bring up much but searching in parents of Megan's law does.

I know it doesn't have to be actual sex. Exposing yourself to someone as they walk by and swinging your dickk around is one thing. Taking a leak outside is another. The first one is sexual in nature even though it's not actual sex. The other one is a bodily function and should be treated as a ticket or public urination or whatever because it's not nice to do but you shouldn't be thrown on the sex offender list for it. I've peed outside in my day and trust me, there was nothing sexual about it. Guess I"m a sex offender

Honestly, if you got caught, and they charged you and a judge said you had to register then yeah, you would be.

My point is, it's ridiculous to lump someone who peed in public (which by the way is a desk appearance ticket according to DH so no judge) in with other types of sex offenders. That's my point. That the law is ridiculous IF that is really the case. There's nothing sexual about peeing. Is it gross to do it in public, yes! Should that person be labeled a sex offender for it and the topic of a thread like this when people find out about it 10 years later-no way. And yeah- just call me a perv.

Cant you just contact the authorities? They should be able to let you know? Or maybe not since it's a level 1?
I just came across this site after quick google search. Says level 1 offenders you need to call the 800 number.

Re: Level 1 sex offender
What the actual fluke with this article?! Obviously given the title they point out things that would be unexpected - teenagers sleeping with each other or peeing in public.
But then there is sleeping with your sibling/incest?!! Um, since when is that surprising as a sex offense???

Re: Level 1 sex offender
I couldn't turn a blind eye to someone being a registered sex offender, no matter how nice I thought they were. I would have to find out more information. I would call the 1800 number someone posted and ask what the offense was. I think these things can be pleaded down, also, can't they?

Just ask them. Much more effective than just gossiping about it with other people.
