Re: Level 1 sex offender

I couldn't turn a blind eye to someone being a registered sex offender, no matter how nice I thought they were. I would have to find out more information. I would call the 1800 number someone posted and ask what the offense was. I think these things can be pleaded down, also, can't they?
I agree. Maybe he's just a first time offender that was pleaded down? I couldn't ignore that. No way. He did something wrong, maybe he hasn't been caught doing worse yet?
There are a lot of times when people are shocked someone could do something awful. So the fact that he hasn't raised any flags or doesn't seem like a creep means nothing to me. A lot of the time, they don't seem like creeps. He did something wrong and I would need to know what it was if I was going to continue to have a relationship with him and there is no way in hell I would ever leave my kids with him.
I know, there are some minor offenses that could get you labeled a sex offender... but let's be real. How often does that actually happen? Chances are this guy did something bad.

Yeah that's the thing too. Like everyone is talking about public urination and yeah while technically that can be considered a level 1 sex offense (only in 13 states though, bear that in mind) a case of public urination even making it that far is rare. In reality it's at most a ticket. Especially in places like NYC. Way bigger fish to fry. So if I had to guess, it is something way bigger than that.

I actually think things like this happen more often than you think. A guy I went to high school with had to register as a sex offender because (at 17 years old) he was caught having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend. Her parents pressed charges. Not that I am telling anyone not to be cautious, but the guy that I mentioned is now a married father of 3 beautiful kids. I don't think that his whole life should be tainted because of consensual relationship that he had as a teenager.

I don't think it happens that often at all. You knowing one guy is not really a testament to it happening all the time. If that was the case, we'd all know multiple people it happened to. I don't know any. If I was in OPs shoes, I would err on the side of caution and protect my kids at all costs.

I agree with this. I would think the majority of offenses are things like this.
Is he employed? If he did something so horrible it would have shown up in a background check and he wouldn’t have a job.
I wouldn’t go ask the guy to babysit but I personally think ending a friendship over something that MAY be an issue is absurd. If you’re that concerned, ask him. I feel bad for this guy’s kids if the whole neighborhood is gossiping about their dad. Regardless of what he did, it isn’t their fault and their friendships shouldn’t suffer.

How do you know you don't know someone who is?
