Level 2 : needs opinions
I was more than excited to go to our level 2 yesterday, until we got some disappointing news! Well we found we are having a boy so DS would have a brother But then we were told there were 3 "soft" markers! A calcification on heart and kidney, as well as a turned foot. All these things wouldn't raise a flag if they were isolated issues but since they are all present at same time it's raising red flags!! I'm distraught, and have to get an amnio on Monday with results by Tuesday afternoon. So until then I'm a wreck. I've never had to deal with this stuff so it's pretty tough. I'm exactly 20 weeks and now faced with this and taking care of an 18 month old. I'm trying to stay positive and hope for the best but it's difficult. my ultra screen was fine and now this coming from left field. Has anyone had this issue with a happy ending or not????

Re: Level 2 : needs opinions
I had my level II last week and had one soft marker with one of my twins. I was told by my OB that baby A had dilated kidneys and she recommended that I see a genetic specialist. Fortunately, I had an appointment with my high risk doctor the same day that I received this phone call. When I met with him, he told me that both babies were very healthy. A normal kidney should be 5mm or less...my little one's kidney was 5.1mm. He said it was nothing to be concerned with but that my OB was just being cautious. I was also considering an amnio but the high risk doctor told me it wasn't necessary. He said dilated kidneys are more common in boys than girls. Do you see a high risk doctor? I wish you luck on Monday...I feel confident that everything will be fine.

Re: Level 2 : needs opinions
We had a white spot on DD's heart at the anatomy scan, so they sent us to a specialist for a level II. The specialist said for the spot to be a concern, it had to be visible from 3 angles and as "white as bone" in the sono. Neither ended up being true. They said ultrasound machines are sometimes just too good and pick up things that aren't a big deal. DD was born 20 weeks later perfectly healthy. My OB still insists it just indicated she has a strong heart.
That was only one marker, of course, but it was still a scary experience. We declined an amnio.
Wishing you the best!!!

no experience but wanted to send you some more love!
I do remember someone else on here having a few markers and they went to an amnio eventually and everything was fine!
I don't want to say more bc I don't remember the details and also it's not my story but it DEF happens. they have to give you all the worst case scenario but it often means nothing!

My cousin's son's feet were turned inward. They were told he had a 1 in 5 chance of having down's. Aside from needing multiple operations on his feet he is fine. Lots of prayers to you!

Re: Level 2 : needs opinions
my son had a soft marker (nasal bone) and was told his chances of having downs was pretty high... i was sent to a genetic councelor and the high risk ob recommended an amnio. the genetic counc said there is so much room for tech error with and he didnt rely on those alone.. he reviewed my 12 week ultrascreen bloodwork, and did not recommend an amnio.
ds was born with a perfect button nose
i pray everythings ok with ur little one

Both my sons had dilated kidneys....they sent me to a specialist and I was soooo nervous. Search on here and you will see. They both came out, peed - and were fine!

Re: Level 2 : needs opinions
What a total nervous wreck you must be!!! Hugs for you!
I remember w/ my DD...I had disappointing news on Presidents weekend from her level II. They told me that I had 3 markers 1. she had cycts on her brain 2 they thought she *might* have a cleft lip and 3 my age. They wanted me to do an amino, which I had to wait for the 3 day weekend in order to do.
Turns out- the cysts are very common. Actually, everyone has them, just some people they don't go away once they're born. Every 1 in 100 people are walking around w/ these cysts on the brain. No biggie.
No cleft lip. do not look at the internet or try to search, it'll make it worse!
My age- ha!
While my "markers" were different from yours, I have a healthy 3 & 1/2 year old. I think they have to tell you everything just in case. The only issue that sounds like it could be true, yet treatable is the foot. My only question would be, did they see extra fluid under the neck? The one time I had extra fluid under the neck was the one time my baby was diagonsed w/ trisomy 18. (We lost that baby) the fluid, IMO, seems to be the only real marker.
I'm praying for you and your LO that everything is OK.

Re: Level 2 : needs opinions
I am so glad you posted your situation. I, too, had three markers found on my level II (on Friday) and have been crying so much over this weekend and trying to stay strong for my four year old. I was told that they detected dilated kidneys and a spot on the heart and possibly a short "long bone" but this wasn't absolute. I think just after hearing "Down Syndrome" everything else is drowned out. I know the doctor said these markers don't mean that my baby has DS but that my risk is higher now. I was told 1: 378 so I don't know if that is good or bad.
We are meeting a genetic counselor on Thursday and I am praying they show different things. We are planning on an amnio if things haven't improved.
I don't have any advice but I want you to know that I am right here with you praying we both beat the odds.
