Lifting toddler after c-section?

Diana's post got me thinking...

I always meant to ask but kept forgetting. I was picking up my two toddlers right when I got home. I did it carefully, but it really was very easy, no pain at all.

My DR said this was because my body was used to me picking them both up all day during the entire pregnancy.

Did anyone else do this too or was I the only crazy one Chat Icon

Re: Lifting toddler after c-section?

I was so paranoid after reading stories on here about incisions opening etc. I can say I really didn't lift Jack for two full weeks. Once DH went back to work I had no choice. Jack was about 34lbs at the time too so my doctor strongly suggested that I not lift him.

I held off for as long as I could (until I didn't have help anymore) not b/c it hurt but b/c my OB told me that a lot of people rip their internal stitches when they forget and lift things like their older children.

Re: Lifting toddler after c-section?

I was scared too after the nurses in the hospital were telling me horror stories about vacuuming after CS & incisions opening & someone else lifting a 2 year old & same...

I had DH or my mom (who stayed w/ me) lift my 33lb. 2 year old for about 2 weeks b4 I attempted to.

How much did your twins weigh?

My toddler (who was almost 2/5 when his brother arrived) was almost 35 pounds. So I was not taking any chances.

unless my son (3) is on fire, I am not lifting his big butt IF i have a repeat c/s. I wouldn't even lift my hand bag last time.....too scared of splitting open and falling apart. Literally.

but, I'm nutso. Chat Icon

they were 19 months - 26lbs so that is a big difference.

Re: Lifting toddler after c-section?

I think it's fantastic that some people can, but I had a miserable recovery, and I wasn't lifting anything, let alone my then-3-year-old, for WEEKS after. Actually, I ripped out 2 stitches doing some laundry about 10 days PP. My incision is a little higher than most people's, and the more people I talk to about it, the more I think that has a lot to do with your mobility right after.

I didn't full out lift my DS until my DH went back to work 2 weeks PP...

One of the nurses who was tending to me in the hospital had told me that she herself made the mistake of picking up her DC after her c-section and ended up having major surgery because she caused some internal damage to herself...She was hopsitalized for a few weeks and everything

DD was about 28lbs and I lifted her right away even though everyone was yelling at me not to.
