I live in Central Florida, there isn't really any public transportation (unless you count the disney monorail Chat Icon) Please explain the problem to me. You are in a public place why should people be catering to you sleeping?

I love you Deb!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Some people think that the PUBLIC of public transportation means they get to dictate how others spend thier communting time!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have been communting for 20 years (I cant beleive I admitted that outloud) on the LIRR and the compalints have been the same thing over and over...loud people, taking up more than one seat...rude people....

Get it??? its NOT going to change!!! Chat Icon so it looks like you will have to change with it! Get ear plugs, turn up your Ipod, change cars or get a job where you an drive your own car and not use public transportation!!

Sorry but I'm getting tired of the same complaints over and over.....Write a letter to the MTA or go to the publi hearings if your commute is that bad....otherwise suck it up!!Chat Icon

are you one of the ones who sit in the seats facing each other sharing all of the details of your life in your happy hour voice?

It's perfectly ok to have your conversations but in a respectful volume and respectful of others as you would in any other public place.

We all have to share public spaces. All I'm asking is for consideration.

No Im not! I commute with my DH every morning and rarely do we say anything to each other AND if we do ...I know how to use my "inside voice". We get on the train, put our headphones on and ge a nice nap in....

Im just saying that you are always complaining about your commute that maybe you are the problem...not everyone else...Chat Icon

I think I'm the one with the guts to do something about it. Look my for book.

I should not have to change my ways for rude people. I will not lie down and take it. I'm not a door mat and I have manners.

If nobody complains and does something then nothing will change. The people who think that the world revolves around them need a wake up call. I have also been commuting for a long time. I guess I'm spoiled by the cars that are quiet in the am rush. When I come across rude people with no regard for others I say something.

Toe nail clippers, loud IPODS (at gym levels), loud cell phone talkers that talk about nothing for the whole trip and those who play their game boys without headphones should know that they are rude.

Don't read my posts if you know what's coming. The title should say it all.

Maybe you shouldn't look for my book.

eta: some actually find my posts about this amusing and some can identify with it. I get the support I need. Thanks.

The most I had was a person laying across all 3 seats sleeping.

Sometimes I miss the traveling adventures of the LIRR

I'm confused...one person says go turn up your ipod another says I don't want to hear your ipod at gym level. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't?

Also, as the family member of a recently hadicapped person hasn't your point of view of life changed a bit? Shouldn't you have learned a little more compasion? For ALL you know one or more of the members of the party could be hard of hearing? Don't say they don't "look" like it because everyone is telling me how "great" and "normal" I look but don't have a clue that I can't see out of one eye, can't smell/breath out of one nostril and can't HEAR out of one ear.

Re: LIRR UGH! Shuttith People!!!

Ok this is getting crazy. It might be hard to understand if you don't have to commute every single day. Yes the LIRR sucks and we need to vent sometimes. I don't think that we don't have compassion because we can't stand people who play their iPods so that I can sing along with the song five rows back. I also don't think it is about compassion when someone puts their bare feet on the seat next to you. Yes could there be someone hard of hearing? Sure but more then likely it is just someone that could care less that their music, voices, gameboy are too loud.

What about compassion for me or anyone else? I am 7 months pg and the only sleep I do get is on the train. Nobody stands up to let me sit down and most of the time push me over to get a seat.

If you don't commute then like I said you don't get it. That is fine but don't tell us we aren't compassionate because we b*tch about things that bother us. It is a public forum and as said before if you know what is coming then don't read it.

I wish I knewChat Icon I just can't get comfortable in bed with this huge belly anymore. I've even tried sleeping in a chair and that doesn't work; but for some reason the train puts me out for the entire ride.

No, they were not hard of hearing at all. I quietly asked them to lower their voices. All of them looked at me and continued on. Some even snickered. They own the train..that's their attitude. I pay almost $300/month for my ticket, I expect civility and consideration from others. Not to mention a clean, comfortable ride where I don't have to stand for an hour each way, which has happened. Some people's bags I guess pay $300 a month as well.

If people continue to listen to their IPODs at unreasonable levels, they will become hard of hearing. My mother is extremely hard of hearing and disabled as well. She wears a hearing aid..it blows but she does it. We adapt to her. I am very aware of disabled people of all disabilities. I've lived with it a long time.

I feel your pain - I take NJ Transit/Metro North (into Rockland Co) and there is a group on my train that is super loud - they don't just sit in the seats that face each other, they sit in the two rows behind those seats as well - and shout to each other two rows back the whole ride.

They usually always sit in the same spot, so I position myself to avoid them but, occasionally, someone is in one of their seats so they relocate right near me Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: LIRR UGH! Shuttith People!!!

The bottom line is that everyone on the train needs to be considerate of the other people on the train, and there are just people who AREN'T. AT ALL. There are rude people in this world, thats all there is to it. And they ride the LIRR. All of us who commute have had the pleasure of riding with these rude people. After paying hundreds of dollars a month for a train ticket and spending hundreds of hours on the train a year, I think its ok to come on here and complain about the things some people do. Unless you have been on the train experienced hearing someone's music 5 rows behind you, heard the conversation on the nextel phone, or experienced the other obnoxious things people do, you should not come on here and lecture people about being compassionate. It has nothing to do with being compassionate. I don't even understand how that came into this discussion.

I have a long commute every day and have the same experiences as everyone else, but if a group is too loud or someone's Ipod is bothering me, I move, if it's possible, or I deal with it.

Personally, I think if you let these things affect you so much, then it will just continue to get worse. If I was as bothered by my LIRR daily experience I wouldn't continue to do it. I see people getting aggitated just because the train pulls into Penn Station a little late - life is too short for that!

This is how I feel about commuting in general. It's not pleasant but for right now it's necessary. I don't get anything out of letting someone else bother me except for bothered. For me, it's just a waste of energy.

Your post reminded me of how relatively pleasant my train mates were during the transit strike. It was 6.00am, cold and dark waiting on the platform and nearly everyone was chatting away having coffee etc. Yet. the week before there was a cancelled train and all hell broke loose. I liked the whole roll with the punches attitude.

How awful for that man. Chat Icon

As my niece would say, "take a chill pill!" If I let stuff like this bother me, I'm sure I would have suffered a stress-induced heart attack by now. There are rude and inconsiderate idiots EVERYWHERE and there are also uptight people everywhere. Find a way to redirect your energy or you'll be constantly pi$sed off. Unless the guy next to me is biting his toenails, I don't really pay attention to my fellow commuters, but then I don't expect public transportation to have the atmosphere of a library.

Re: LIRR UGH! Shuttith People!!!

Just because people vent here and share stores does not mean that these same people are heart attacks waiting to happen or that they are entirely consumed by hatred and anger over their commute.

We're venting. We're sharing funny and sometimes disgusting stories. It's a way of bonding and a way of letting off steam. Good for you if none of this ever bothers you, but guess what - sometimes it bothers me, and sometimes it's good to complain to people who understand and have been through the same thing.

We're by no means miserable, unstable, unhappy people. We're just venting about a common experience. We're NOT going to be marching through Penn Station demanding quiet cars, nor are we (like the psycho on the LB line) going to be hitting people or spilling coffee on them. Most of the time, I'm amused by what I see on the train... like two days ago when a woman was reading a "Compilation of Erotic Stories" on the train with a very suggestive cover. Re: LIRR UGH! Shuttith People!!!

I commuted for a long time both Long Island and NJ -- and unless you do it everyday you don't realize that it is important to be considerate on mass transit.

It's the same as driving and letting people into your lane when they need to get off the road. Or, in a movie theatre, being quiet and not speaking.

It's hard to commute in a train or a bus every day, deal with lateness, deal with running for it, getting into a bad car and you think - should I move or should I stay? and then you stay and are stuck.

At 6 or 7 in the morning, it isn't so much to ask to lower your voice. To watch your surroundings, to understand that people are trying to either sleep, do work, or plain enjoy some peace and quiet.

I really feel your pain!

Seriously, why is this such a big deal and why are people telling others to get a grip and deal?
We all have our moments, whether it be because of their commute, their job, their family troubles or just plain boredom.

I don't understand why we are making such a big deal about someone's bad commute with people who are NOTORIOUSLY rude, inconsiderate and ignorant.

Aren't we ALL allowed to blow off some steam here? I don't care if it's something stupid or something serious.

This board is starting to act like those LIRR riders who only care about themselves and look to jump on the "let's attack" bandwagon and it's really sickening.

People on our train had a birthday party for one of the women. They made her wear a crown and passed out donuts. (She was turning 40, I believe...) I always wondered why they didn't throw me a train bridal shower. Maybe b/c I didn't take a donut... Chat Icon ... or maybe b/c they don't know me. Could be either one. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think if the LIRR didn't make announcement on every train to be respectful of the riders around you (ie. cell phones, conversations, feet on seats), than we wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

I think there's a difference between the park, playground and street, and the train. The train is so enclosed so you hear every snort, sneeze, cough, sexual escapade of the commuter sitting behind you....you even hear the toilet flush if God-forbid you're in the bathroom car.

I think we're all just pisssed off because we're stuck with people whom we'd rather NOT be stuck with on a daily basis... there's no escape.

I have to say, I'm super lucky in the morning that my train, well my car, is really quiet...

I made that suggestion to the MTA and the reply I received was that an overwhelming majority wanted the freedom to use their cell phones.

Thank you Kim, as I stated earlier, I live down south and I never have had to use the train everyday for business. I had NO idea that announcements were made. That clarifies it a ton for me.

i put that in 2 different categories though

cell phone use should be a must but only for emergencies

if you're gonna talk on the phone for the whole trip for business of have a gab session with friends - stay out of the quiet car
