Local 3 wives...are you there???? anyone's DH get a layoff?

DH just got laid off today and he's ******....

he said it could be 7 months or more!!!

Honestly, just call me ignorant or whatever, but can't something be DONE to prevent this?????? There are guys out there with multiple kids and huge mortgages and bills and mouths to feed and this is what we do to them?????

Thankfully we will likely be OK barring something disastrous, but SERIOUSLY!!!!!!

This is totally unacceptable.

My DH has been seriously talking about going to get his masters in education and becoming a teacher....he can't take it anymore and I feel terrible.....Chat Icon

Re: Local 3 wives...are you there???? anyone's DH get a layoff?

My husband is local 25 - but just returned to work after being on the list for over a YEAR. What's awful is that they have a 45 day rule now in this union. If he works for 45 days or more he goes to the bottom slot on the list!! He's nervous because his 45 days is right around the corner and the job he's on is coming to a close.. plus it's winter so there aren't a lot of new jobs. But.. believe it or not .. even though 45 days won't count toward a new year, he does have another 20 odd weeks of unemployment on his old claim. Unemployment emergency benefits bring you over a year of unemployment because things are so bad!

Rob's only ever done electrical work.. if he gets laid off in the next few weeks it's going to be BAAAAAAAAAD.Chat Icon

I know - it's horrible wondering if every pay day is the start of that 8 months.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Let's hope the recovery $$ starts with construction jobs.

DH did go back on Monday & it looks like he'll be on for awhile, but his company is probably going under from what he's heard.

This is why my husband is leaving his union job and going to work for a family business. Its too unpredictable these days and the stress is just not worth it to him. I have great benefits and he will be rolling over his pension $$ into a private account that he will contribute to until retirement.

Not local 3, but DH is also union and has been out for a few weeks. Luckily he'd been consistently working this year - there are guys who have been out since last November.
I think about all the families that are only 1 income.
What I can't stand is the political BS w/ the union hall - sending guys out that are slackers, but are drinking buddies with the guys who work the lists.

My brother is in Local 3 and was laid off last week for 7-8 months. He doesn't have a family yo support but he does have a mortgage. I feel terrible for him especially since they did away with their B fund.

He is focusing on getting some side jobs to hold him over. Hang in there. My DH was in another local and laid off too.

Re: Local 3 wives...are you there???? anyone's DH get a layoff?

So far I have been unemployed 33 weeks since December 10th with Local 3. I only worked 11 weeks this year. My good friend has only worked 3 1/2 weeks this year. Things are not looking any better any time soon. There is no work available, therefore no place to put anyone. I'm seriously getting more and more depressed sitting home, because sitting home is just not for me.

ETA I was told to call in a few weeks to find out what my status is.

My FIL is Local 3 and has been out all but 1 week since the beginning of the summer at least (actually it may have been longer). He is retiring next year, but was hoping to build up his benefits a bit more before retirement.

I agree about the education thing. An old friend from high school, who was a teacher and a coach at our old school, just emailed our former team to say even HE can't get a job in the school district and will be moving to Colorado. Everyone's first instinct seems to be Well I'll become a teacher. Unfortunately, that makes education MUCH more competitive and it's better if you know someone in the school you're applying for.

I'm sorry your DH is having a rough time. Unions do some good things for their workers (pensions, fair distribution of jobs) but there also have to be some negatives and when they come around, they $suck.

Well, if a negative is only working 1 month out of a YEAR and people have to sell their homes then I think this union has some reorganizing to do!

I have spoken to a few people in the education field and was told that if DH wants to become a math teacher (which he does) in the middle schools, then he'll get gobbled up. He has some coursework ahead of him so hopefully by that time things will have picked up.

And I see the same thing in my field....when times get tough, many people turn to the wedding industry....

DH got laid off when he turned A. He was out for 6 months. It sucks!!!! There's nothing you can do about it. Everyone has to "put in their time". Whatever. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We got thru it, thankfully without having to take money from his funds. But it was annoying. The good news is he got a lot done around the house. And he did some side jobs with a buddy of his who was also laid off.

I agree, I know so many teachers who can't find jobs on Long Island. Unless you know someone it's very hard to get a teaching job on Long Island.

DH just turned A..but he is still working. There is no work, so what are they supposed to do? Its a horrible time right now, and if there is no construction going on, unfortunatley there will be no work. DH is already thinking about side jobs incase he does get laid off.

My dh is local 3 and I am a NERVOUS WRECK every single day over a possible lay off. I am a SAHM so obviously we are on only one income. Its so stressful. I was wondering though, does anyone else take the checks when they are laid off for so long? We wouldnt be able to survive without them. I know the "B" fund is gone and he tries to explain it to me, but I dont get where those checks come from. He SWEARS its fine to take them but when I read on here, it looks like no one else does it?

Yes, I was told the EXACT same thing. Please do your research. I can't even get a sub position. I wish I had never spent so much time in a field where there are NO jobs on LI.

ITA, which isn't necessarily a good alternative either. The down swings of the economy hit us later than other industries but will also likely have a more lasting impact.

We've fortunately been pretty busy but people are spending less which certainly effects the bottom line all around.

This year alone we have lost 3 major invitation manufacturers and 1 smaller company too. Just last week Conde Nast shut down 2 popular wedding magazines: Modern Bride and Elegant Bride.

We try not to take the checks since they're coming out of a K fund now. We take the holiday checks which are automatic but don't opt to take anything for the time he's out. I can't believe they reclassified the funds. Our B fund is gone now too. Between unemployment & my salary, we're ok but he hasn't been out longer than 10 weeks a year.

Re: Local 3 wives...are you there???? anyone's DH get a layoff?

The 10 weeks off a year is furlough... a different animal altogether than a layoff. I've worked ELEVEN weeks so far this YEAR.

There are a lot of people that have 1,000's in their B fund still. There are younger people like me that have nothing.

You can take it out of your other funds but what are you going to be left with when you retire? That is your pension money you are talking about. In MY opinion I will not take any money out of those funds. In my brothers opinion, he'd rather pay the taxes now to withdraw early and have the money now. Another brother has a LOT of money in his B fund and only uses it for emergencies. Another brother has taken the money out but put it into his own savings account. Yes I have a lot of brothers. I see what my dad gets since being retired and I will leave my money right where it is.

You really need to sit down with him and learn about the system. I've seen too many horror stories where wives are left in the dark. Some wives don't even know what the husband makes!!! (And it's a joke how many say that their wives still think they make 1st years apprentice rate).

Re: Local 3 wives...are you there???? anyone's DH get a layoff?

its hard - but you somehow manage to get through it . DH is in local 15D and has been out pretty much since right before xmas.... so we are going on 11 months though.....

just take it day by day - unfortunately there really isnt much that the unions can do if there are no job sites out there.... DH is in heavy construction and it seems to be starting to pick up now.

so fingers crossed and job vibes for everyone,
