LONG IL VENT - They just found OUT and the comments are starting already !!! ???
I just started my 9th week on Friday, but DH wanted to tell his Grandparents and Aunt/Uncle yesterday b/c it was their 60th Anniversary and we would all be together - Ok fine, I didn't want to ruin his excitement. -
1. - He had told FIL weeks ago when we told my parents and since then, no call, no congratualtions, no how do you feel .........nothing. OK then, whatever.
When he SAW me yesterday, still nothing.
2. After DH tells the family they're all happy and excited (this is the 1st baby in the immediate family) and my FIL interrupts the entire table to say "Um, WHY is no one Congratulating ME? I'm the one who's going to be a Grandpa?" - Um, well your SON is the one who's going to be a farther you moron !! - My SIL shot back w/ "That's exactly the kind of comment that's going to put you on the Grandpa that never sees the kid list" - I could have kissed her !!
3. DH's grandma asks me from across the table in front of everyone, "Are you going to WORK once the baby comes?" - They all know I don't HAVE to work as DH works w/ his Uncle who's always bragging about him - But I want to work, and DH wants me to work and so I'm going to work -
So I say, yes. And she of course is horrified and shakes her head and DH says "Well, Marisa worked really hard to get to where she is, and it's important to her to keep working, and it's important to me that she keeps working too........." So Grandma tells everyone at the table that "THIS is the problem w/ these girls today - they have to go to college and get educations, and JOBS and then when they get married and have babies they can't be bothered taking care of their family. - THAT's why no one can make it to 60 year anniversaries anymore" ........
Gee, thanks Granny for telling everyone at the table I'm a selfish beyotch who's going to be a bad mother and a bad wife and get divorced !!! -
I honestly don't let it bother me b/c she's 82 years old and DH's Grandfather has always had a ton of money - so she never had to work a day in her life ..........but really? You couldn't have kept that one to yourself ???
So, later in the conversation when she asked me who I was voting for, I grinned and told her OBAMA !!! -

I have to deal with stupid comments from FIL all the time....I'm learning it's who he is and I can't change it. I would just ignore the comments...it's better to ignore it than get all annoyed and angry.

mmmmm.... gotta love the comments at some family events.....
well, the fact that you're not out on bail today means you handled yourself with lots of grace and deserve an 
I've tried to do my best to bite my tongue when the family is around. (my adversaries are my BILs... and boy can they be @-holes at times.) doesn't always come out gracefully, though. Sometimes I escape to the bathroom or the room where the kids are playing becuase I can't handle the conversation anymore. and most of the time, the conversation isn't as ugly as the one you just described!

I totally feel your pain. This is the first weekend I saw my IL's since I got pregnant.
My head is still reeling from the comments I received.
I give you kudos for not saying anything worse back to them.
The worst thing I got was from DH's aunt after I told her I was having the Downs and Quad screening done.
"Oh, that's just a way for the insurance companies to make money. Those tests are a waste of your time."

As annoying as those comments are... you gotta just let it roll off your back-- after you get p!ssed about it.
People are people-- and unfortunately you can't change them. You don't have to listen to them though!

Your story sounded like it could be in a sitcom...

You should have told her "NADER" and REALLY watch her head spin! That's my standard answer as I prefer not to discuss politics in groups - no good ever comes from it.

I normally would have NEVER said that - I never ever discuss politics, and usually would have just said I haven't decided yet or something like that - But after THAT little out burst from her, I wanted to throw it back -  I know I know, not very mature, but it was a moment of weakness !!

that goes without saying. they obviously have personalities that are incompatible with co-habitation or even civil discussion.... Hate to say it, but I presumed that once I read how charming they were
will say, though, that I suspect that jab about not making it to a 60th anniversary was meant for the entire table, not only for you

MIL's family is much more about the Irish Catholic guilt, so I'm sure I'll be getting sh*t from that end too - But MIL was a working Mom b/c she HAD to work, so hopefully I'll ecsape that conversation when we tell her side -
She has been awesome, it's really my FIL that's ther jerk -

I don't know, there's just something about DH's grandmothers. I'm having issue with my DH's grandmother. I posted a while ago on how she was on my arse about my diet and my blood pressure. She wants me to take it everyday. She was a doctor in her country, but she was a medical examiner who dealt with dead people. I am praying to god that she doesn't know that my blood pressure on Saturday was 160/90 and that I'm on bed rest this week. For my own sake, sanity and blood pressure, I don't need her on my arse again about taking it and getting the I told you so's from her. She called me last week to see how it was and of course i told her it was fine, but I also told her that I still can't work this stupid blood pressure cuff.
I even told my doctor on Saturday that she was over bearing about it and the doctor didn't like it.
Its so hard to bite your tongue, especially when the hormones are running rampant.
