Looking for some Winthrop feedback!!
Found out Saturday that we have the option of delivering at Winthrop OR LIJ (thought LIJ was only option).
None of us have any experience at Winthrop (I had DS @ LIJ and my other SIL had DD there as well).
We're leaning towards Winthrop (have "tour" scheduled for 7/20) as their private rooms are SIGNIFICANTLY less than LIJ and considering out situation, we DEF. want a private room.
Other than that- I have no qualms with LIJ.
Can those how have experience at Winthrop give me more feedback????
TIA!!

Re: Looking for some Winthrop feedback!!
I delivered at Winthrop in March, I had chosen Winthrop because it has one of the top rated NICU's. Well, I'm glad I did because DS ended up having to stay in the NICU for 1 week. The NICU nurses and doctors took excellent care of him. As for the L&D nurses, I can't say enough about them....they were so wonderful! I was almost sad to leave lol. The lactation consultant (Betty) came and worked with me every day and was so helpful and sweet. As far as the private rooms go, Winthrop only has 8 total and it's on a first come, first serve basis. There were no private rooms available when I delivered but I ended up not having a roommate the first 3 days I was there, so it was like I had a private room but for free! I've never been to LIJ, but I would highly recommend Winthrop.

Hmm, thought my OB said there were 16 private rooms. Weird. I know it's 1st come 1st serve (which stinks, bu I understand).
I am pretty sure LIJ has fewer pvt rooms

I think there are 16 labor and delivery suites...maybe that is what your OB was referring to?

Re: Looking for some Winthrop feedback!!
I delivered my first kids there back in 2006. The experience was nothing short of amazing and I delivered over the labor day weekend when they were short staffed and still was amazed.
The nurses there go above and beyond and really understand the issues you are going through. They will take your baby from you at any time so that you can get some rest and they have great security too.
I shared a room and was in there for 5 days. I had two nights by myself and it was really not that bad. I will be doing it again with this one.
I also think the delivery room staff was amazing. I had a planned c-section and my doctor was running late and the nurses called him up and really got on him about the fact that I was ready to go in and we were waiting on him. And in the operating room the nurses, pediatrician, anestheoligist and nurses were great. One thing...winthrop is a teaching hospital so you might have resident's in the room with you. Growing up in a family with nurses in them, I did not care, but they do ask you and my doctor allowed a resident to do most of my c-section which was fine by me. Not sure if LIJ is the same way.

Re: Looking for some Winthrop feedback!!
I actually switched Dr's early in my 1st pregnancy to deliver at Winthrop because of the top rated NICU...LOVED it!! Clean, friendly, and delish food...Im looking fwd to it as a "hotel getaway" when I deliver DS in Sept. lol Great hospital and cant say enough about the staff, they were wonderful!! I had to share a room the first night but hope I can get a private the whole time this time around..Loved the single and terrific experience

I delivered at Winthrop both times - it was amazing. I also requested (and received) a private room both times. Just ask for one the second you check in, there shouldn't be a problem unless there is a huge baby boom that night!

Re: Looking for some Winthrop feedback!!
Sorry to crash -- but when you ladies say that the private rooms at Winthrop are first come, first serve, does that mean there is no additional cost? I know that may be a silly question, but I have been confused by this.

You still have to pay for them but it isn't guaranteed that there will be one available. They are very accomodating though! I had twins there in March and they moved me to a seperate room since we had a lot of stuff (and visitors), I was the last to get a roommate and I only had her for one night.
