Loose Stool in dogs
Our bulldog puppy had the runs for about a week. He was eating Blue Buffalo dry food. The vet said it was too rich for him and told us to give him Hills Prescription Diet can food. Great except its $30 for 4 days worth of food!
I tried another brand and he got the runs again. Has anyone has this problem and is there any other food I can try that won't break the bank? Thanks!!

My dog casey cannot eat wellness because its too rich for her, so we ended up putting her on iams which works for her. I asked my vet if it was okay to give her iams and she said yes her pets have always been on it and it works great for them.

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
Are you switching the food gradually? Sometimes an outright switch can jar their systems. We just switched our dog to Blue Buffalo and she had loose stool on and off for a week or two while we made the switch, but now she is used to it.

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
If the dog had been doing fine on the blue buffalo food for months prior to this episode it may simply have been a viral stomach upset of some sort.
Just be sure to gradually introduce any new diets as stated above. In addition, underfeeding is a key way to help get rid of loose stools. Even skipping a meal as cruel as it may seem can do wonders.

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
any chance he was drinking rain water outside? my dog gets the runs everytime it rains - even if there are no puddles, she'll lick the grass. our vet gave us prescription meds to give her

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
try aunt libby's can of pumpkin for loose stools put a teaspoon/tablespoon in each meal to help firm up that stool! i would do this for a few days until you see an improvement---but i wouldn't over do it!
we have had success with innova dog food --we tried wellness and it was too much on my pups belly
like the others have said...when switching foods-do so slowly
what type of bulldog do you have?

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
We have tried so many of the good foods out there (Innova, Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Taste of the Wild and Natural Balance) and they were all too rich for Apollo and he had the runs too. Our vet suggested Pro Plan large breed puppy (he's a boxer) and he did awesome on it. A 30lb bag is aorund $40. Sometimes less, if on sale at Petco. Now he's on a $80 (for 30lb) prescription food b/c of his allergies but prior to his allergies acting up, he was doing amazing on the Pro Plan. I also squirt some salmon oil in his food and this keeps his coat nice and shiny and is supposed to boost his immune system. I get it from amazon: Grizzly Salmon Oil

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
You could try alittle bit of rice in his food to help bind him alittle. also switching food will give them the runs. I believe my brother who also has bulldogs has his on california natural.

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
Thanks everyone.
We had been using Blue Buffalo since the day we got him. His stools were always on the soft side but then they got really loose.
Our vet had us change to Hills Prescription Diet wd canned food. As soon as we switched, he stools went back to normal. $30 for 4 days of food is a little nuts though. I am going to try some other low fat food.

Re: Loose Stool in dogs
We use nutrimax lamb and rice. Our dog has a very sensitive stomach and this was recommended. Also make surevto avoid table foods and treats for a while
