low sugar snack ideas
I need to reel in the sugar snacks. My kids eat way too much sugar. What healthier snacks do you send your kids to school with?

These are my "go-to"s: Yogurt, cheese sticks, pretzel crisps, fruit, vegetables, veggie straws, ritz crackers

Same here. Also Pirate Booty or popcorn. We try to do whole wheat ritz crackers so I feel a little better about it.
ETA: Now that DS is starting on baby snacks she's snacking on Cheerios, Puffs, and yogurt melts too.

Thanks for these ideas. I never think of things like pudding and jello. I ordered the sugar free for them. My kids are all addicted to fruit snacks and little bites. I have to get them to eat healthier things.

Just be mindful of the artificial sweeteners when giving kids sugar free foods. It may not be actual sugar, but it's just as bad.
Not trying to be food police at all. I am also watching the sugar and carb intake of myself and my kids and it's eye-opening the amount of artificial sweeteners in sugar free and low carb snacks.
For my daughter, I limit her carb intake which in turn limits her sugar intake. I'd rather she get sugar from natural sources like fruits and veggies.
It's hard to manage and they are kids and just want to eat the same snacks that they see their friends eating. But I have struggled with my weight my entire life and I do not want that for my kids.
An example of my daughters typical school day is:
Breakfast: 2% Fairlife Milk, greek yogurt (usually flavored), some type of fruit
Lunch: turkey or ham roll ups (I buy applegate farms), carrot sticks, cheese stick, fruit and water
School snack: kids kind granola bar & applesauce; yogurt raisins & applesauce; pirate booty
I look at every label and compare carbs and sugars. Sometimes I will buy something that is higher in carb/sugar but is all natural.

Fruits! Grapes, apples, clementines, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, cherry tomato
Vegs: Carrot sticks, raw broccoli (yep, they like it)
Pantry stuff: Applesauce, Fruit cups, granola bars, frozen yogurt sticks, cheese
We need low salt... but it’s all pretty low in sugar.

Be careful with the fruit if you're trying to limit sugar. If you're just trying to curb "junk food", that's different.
As a diabetic, I know that fruits are loaded with sugar. That's one of the things that we go to when our blood sugar is low because they have so much sugar in them.
A whole mango has about 45g of sugar! A cup of grapes has about 23g of sugar. A medium wedge of watermelon has about 17g of sugar.

Do they like hummus? I know my DD does not because she is so picky lol but hummus with veges is a good option if they will eat it.

Our go tos are usually some variation of
Cheese stick/Baby Bell & grapes or berries or apple slices or cherry tomatoes or those olives to go cups
Individual guacamole or hummus or ranch dressing cups and pepper strips/baby carrots/celery/cucumbers...

Personally, I don't limit fruits and veggies for my kids or myself bc of the sugars.

So while we distinguish between naturally occurring and added sugars on food labels, our bodies don't distinguish between a molecule of fructose, glucose, sucrose, or whatever other sugar molecule you consume."

There are several articles about this, but the info I quoted above is from here. Can our bodies tell the difference between natural and added sugar?
Now in the case of non diabetics this is not a huge deal, but you can absolutely notice weight gain etc if you eat unlimited and unchecked fruit. I mean, still better than a sleeve of cookies, but still not guilt free.

Thank you! I've always been told that natural sugars are processed way differently. I never questioned it.
However, I don't eat a tremendous amount of fruit every day otherwise my stomach would be upset. Just like I wouldn't let the kids eat a whole bowl of grapes bc they'd be in the bathroom all day long. LOL So maybe bc we know that if we eat too much fruit it would cause an upset tummy, we tend to eat less of fruits? KWIM?

We process the sugars slowly in natural, whole fruits because of the fibers in them. The fibers alter absorption. The blood sugar spike is slower and insulin release is more gradual. So while true that sugar is sugar, the stuff around it makes a difference.
If you are a diabetic, you definitely have to mind it (but I don’t think that’s the case w OP) and you can’t go nuts even as a non diabetic... but my kids can only eat so many fruits.
Got back to the the topic because... we get air popped popcorn that the kids like. It’s not high in salt content too.
