Ang, I am NOT comfortable with them disciplining Lucas for taking a toy! Here's why- besides the fact he suffered the natural consequence of that by being bitten, he was doing a very age appropriate behavior that should have been redirected as he was doing it, not after he was bitten and then punish him further. Don't they know anything about child development???? And even the reactive approach of putting him in the crib teaches him nothing about communicating!!!! If anything it can teach him the crib is a punishing place! I am not happy with them!!!!

ITA! Kids don't know how to share. They need to be taught, not put in a crib! Chat Icon

Re: Lucas had a really bad day (UPDATE - DH spoke with the teacher)

My older son used to get bit all the time, if there was a biter he got bit. There used to be this one kid at his daycare that was a compulsive biter....like three time in one day. I had enough of it and finally sat down and talked to the director and they removed the child for a while and brought him back...kept biting, sat down had another conversation with the direct and the kid got kicked out. The sad part is my son...now 13 almost 14, still remembers being bit by this kid....and he associates any kid with that name to the compulsive biter. He still remmebers all the bites he took from that kid....so sad.

I would be concerned that Lucas was punished b/c he didnt share...

It's not until they are about 2 that children learn about how to possess something. It's around this age that they start using the word “mine”. A child must first learn to “possess” something before they can learn to share it....

Basically we start teaching our children to share right from the beginning. However, no child should be punished for not sharing until they are 3ish...

To me it's like punishing a baby for wetting his diaper...He should have been redirected not punished...

I got a call into daycare...

The Director agreed that he should not be put in a crib and that he did nothing wrong. Actually she said that the policy is that no child is to be placed in a crib like that and they do not do 'time-out' so she is going to get the full story now and follow up on the biting.

Re: Lucas had a really bad day (UPDATE - DH spoke with the teacher)

First of all there are a few things I would be very upset about. He was punished for NOT SHARING TOYS- ummm... they don't share at his age, they don't even understand the concept so how can be punished for it.
Secondly, how can there be no incident report for the second bite if that is what they do?Chat Icon I would like to see that!
And although children do bite at this age twice in one day seems to be a bit of a problem- I don't see why she didn't receive a consequence for that!

Ok, now I am upset for you Ang! Chat Icon

I do feel better in one way but my stomach turns in another. The one time that Lucas bit the child he was for a fact placed in the crib - the teacher in this room told me herself. At the time I let it go because he did bit another child but now that I understand that that is not policy I wish I had spoken up then Chat Icon

I know - it is SO hard to speak up when you are taken off guard and haven't had time to think it through. I always obsess afterward when I've had time to think of all the better things I could have said. Try not to let it get to you too much, although I know how hard that is.
