Lunch & Snack Ideas

Would love some lunch and snack ideas.

My DD will be starting Kindergarten and I don't want to give her PBJ every day - although she would love that!

Re: Lunch & Snack Ideas

Get a Thermos so that way she can have mac and cheese or chicken nugs or soup... it will all stay hot (especially if you fill the Thermos with boiling water before hand, it warms up the Thermos and keeps the food warmer, longer).

Re: Lunch & Snack Ideas

DD always brings a sandwich of some kind or a bagel and cream cheese.
She's not a very adventurous eater! LOL

She does buy lunch too on days they are serving something she likes.

Do you have a brand recommendation? She would love for me to carry on the Daycare tradition of Mac & Cheese Fridays!

Re: Lunch & Snack Ideas

DS gets a rotation of the following:

PBJ
Bologna and cheese sandwich
Plain bagel with butter
Lunchables

He's really a creature of habit and most other options are messy.

I always pack him a snack with his lunch - either a bag of chips, fruit snacks, goldfish crackers, or a bag of those little bites (chocolate chips or party cake flavor).

For snack time I try to be a little healthier. Either a ziplock of grapes, a cup of apple sauce, apple slices, pretzel sticks, a GoGurt. And I usually pack him a water bottle that he can keep at his table with him throughout the day.

Now, a co-worker of mine goes ALL OUT. She makes her kids little containers of penne vodka, chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, etc. and warms them up in the morning before they get on the bus and puts a thermos of boiled water in their lunch bag. She said it's always still warm when they get to lunch. She also packs them a slice of homemade (yes, as in she bakes them herself every single week) pie, cake, or cookies as a snack every.single.day. I dont know how this woman does it. Definitely get a Funtainer! I pack mac n cheese, pasta salad, spaghetti and meatballs, ravioli, soups, etc. in it. Works great!!

We have a bento type lunchbox (Yumbox), and when I don't use the funtainer I do a lot of different things. Cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, fruit, bagels, roll ups, sandwiches, salad

I'm surprised at all the PB&J's
We aren't allowed to bring peanut butter into DD's school.

We allow PB&J in the cafeteria only. There are nut free tables. There are no nut snacks allowed in the classrooms.

We have the Yumbox - which is great for keeping things separate (and doesn't run into other compartments). DS has a nut allergy so we have to pack his lunch every day (can't buy from the school).

DS is picky about not eating reheated food so he mostly ate cut up hot dogs (the kind with no nitrates), a yogurt pack (long skinny one like what you'd get at McDonalds), baby carrots, and grapes. We sub other fruits, but grapes seems to be the least messy and doesn't brown.

For his snack, we'd send popcorn, pretzels, soy chips, or a banana.

In a perfect world, I'd get him to eat a larger variety. I have the school lunches ebooks from 100 Days of Real Food, and I'd love for him to eat the stuff there, but after consistently throwing food away we realized that he would only eat certain things. This year I'm going to try prepping at night so I have more time to put into it, instead of just throwing in what he likes every day.

We also have a no nut (including all tree nuts) policy

Sometimes I'll do chicken soup which they like, bagel with cream cheese, sandwich, yogurt.
For snacks we usually do mini muffins.

I'm dreading having to deal with school lunches again!

We are in our district. The peanut allergy kids sit at a separate lunch table, and their friends can sit with them if they have a peanut free lunch.

Classroom is allergy dependent. No allergies, you can bring nut items.

Lunch & Snack Ideas

Does the Yumbox fit in the standard lunchbox? I got DD a soft insulated one from Target.

One more question - I just purchased the Funtainer Food Jar. Should I heat it up before putting in the hot food? Someone suggested add boiling hot water to the container and then wipe it out and put the food in.

Theres stain less steel in the funtainer. Do not microwave it. Do the boiling water suggestion. I do it. Works fab!

So you just fill it with boiling water, dump it out and wipe it down before adding your food? I'd love to be able to give my kids chicken nuggets, pizza bites, Mac n cheese as lunch options. They don't always eat sandwhiches but I don't want their hot food to be cold by the time lunch comes. They too are starting kindergarten so I'm new to this.

I boil water while I warm up his lunch - toaster oven or a separate pot if it's pasta etc- when the water is boiling, I pour it into the thermos and cover it and let it sit for a few minutes.

When the food is warmed up I dump out the water and put the food in the thermos

I just buy the Thomas's mini bagels (she barely can even finish that) and I don't toast them. I feel like if you toast them and then they cool off they get very hard

Re: Lunch & Snack Ideas

Whatever my son normally eats is what I pack for lunches. Probably 3 out of the 5 days he prefers to eat hot lunches so the thermos is the way to go. Anything from meatballs, pasta, mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, leftovers - he's good!

The other days he loves these little salami's and cheese with Ritz crackers. Basically it's a homemade version of those lunchables, but fresher and tastier if there is such a thing. He also loves sandwiches.

He always has a yogurt and a cheese stick in his lunch bag too.
