Re: major daycare problem
When I went to interview the place where Danielle is, they told me they never prop the bottles. To be honest, I never even thought to ask. I go there all the time at various times and in the infant room, they always hold the babies who can't hold the bottle themselves.
State law is that one teacher can watch 4 children. I can't believe that all 4 children would be on the same schedule, so they can rotate and it is possible.
Maybe I'm just not that trusting, but, to be honest, I don't believe the mother of the twins instructed them to prop the bottles.
I would def. go unannounced next week and see what they're doing. In the meantime.... maybe looking into Plan B isn't the worst idea.
Edited to add- so sorry you have to deal w/ this!!!!

I would find a new daycare. Regular bottle propping can cause ear infections. My cousin's bottle was always propped when he was a baby and he had to have tubes in his ears and has hearing loss because of constant ear infections. i even read that in What to Expect in the First Year.
never heard of this
I wonder if it is totally contributed to the propping of bottles how old the child was, how frequent the propping was and if any other factors were invovled.
I agree under a certain age they need to be held to be fed. The daycare im at lets those babies scream/cry and fuss until they can be held to be fed. Breaks my heart but i get it.
AJ is over 1 yr tho, so I see no issue with them propping her bottle from time to time. Frankly she gets fed up and either holds it herself (she actually hates it propped unless she's being lazy) or she shoves it away.
Again, I think there's more to this story. Still I'd say its a good start that the director took immediate action.
Each child is treated differently. I know my daughter NEVER has warmed bottles. never has, never will. they are under instructions NOT to warm her bottle since she was 3mo old. At first this daycare thought I was a little crazy i guess or just 'forgot' cause i noticed AJ got fussy with cold milk (formula) and i wondered. So i asked and found out one of the girls didnt see the note and had warmed her bottles. Sure enough once she got the same at daycare as she did at home, she stopped being fussy about feedings.
I think its worth the time and effort to stay invovled with your child's daycare and how your child is cared for. Positive but constant attention to details and open communication with the director and staff sets clear lines of how you want your child treated. Leave little for assumption. It may sound redundant or nagging but its your child. They have or have had several children in their care, your invovlment with your child's care makes it unique as much as they do for providing that care. It serves everyone if you keep the flow of care an open and constant discussion. If they can't do this or do not work with you then, yes, I think its worth leaving.
ETA: I ask about the propping / ear infection cause #1 AJ gets regular ear infections but she is always sick first #2 I used to get them all the time too #3 I had tubes put in twce #4 I have middle ear deafness #5 Im pretty sure I was prop fed ... but most importantly it wouldnt have mattered I would have still ended up with my deafness and tubes regardless of how i was fed. *shrug*

Re: major daycare problem
I would stop in several times during the week at different times to make sure this was not happening.
The daycare center I worked in never propped bottles unless it was an extreme situation and only for a minute----like if another baby started crying and needed to be picked up/moved...but we'd always go back and feed the one we left.

Re: major daycare problem
I will tell you right now that it is against regulation to prop bottles whether the Mom said it was ok or not. The director should of told the mother they aren't allowed to do that.

I would not be comfortable at all. When I was looking on the NY Office and Children Services website on daycares I saw that the one I chose got a violation for having a child under a certain age hold their own bottle (or it was propped). I forgot the situation. I asked the Director about it and she said something like they State woman walked in at the wrong time and it was fixed immediatly. It even says so on the State's email. The Director told me that they're not allowed to ever prop the bottles and the teachers always hold young babies when feeding.
Is this is private daycare? Did you check this site on them?

I did not know this.....still wouldnt really bother me if they did it from time to time, but good to know

Thank you Stacey :) that's what I thought too!
I called another center that we had looked at too and I loved but they were full. I took a chance and asked if they had a spot and they do! I stopped in there today and let me tell you, what a difference. Completely diff atmosphere. I'm confident in my decision as a parent. I cannot go to work each day and be panicking about stuff.

I am glad that you are going with your gut and have found a setting in which you are more comfortable. It w ill make going back to work a little easier.

on a side note... this site is very helpful. thank you for posting it. I think every one has a certain comfort level as to what is and what isn't acceptable when it comes to their own child/children. YOU must leave the daycare not worrying for a moment that your child isn't being taken care of the way YOU would like to see them taken care of. I think you definitely did the right thing by addressing it and I would def take some of the girls advice and make a few unannounced visits. I will be doing it when my girls start daycare in January. If you and your DH decide that you cannot trust this daycare, then take a few days off next week (if you can) and make different arrangements so you can work w/ a clear mind. Good Luck

Re: major daycare problem
You know what? Everything happens for a reason! You just decided to take a peek, and thank goodness you did. Whether or not anyone else feels comfortable with bottle propping doesn't matter. You don't. End of story and the fact that they seemed so laid back about it worries me. I'm glad you were able to get into your first choice daycare!

Re: major daycare problem
You will never be able to leave your child there. Start finding a new place. I would call the County childcare department and report what you saw. I am sorry but from one daycare mom to another I just know that once you have a bad experience you cannot leave your baby/child there.

Re: major daycare problem
Whether or not the parent props bottles at home.....it is against state regs for them to be doing so in daycare...
418-1.12 Nutrition
(n) Infants six months of age or younger must be held while being bottle-fed. Other infants must be held while being bottle fed until the infant consistently demonstrates the capability of holding the bottle and ingesting an adequate portion of the contents thereof. The propping of bottles is prohibited.
(o) Each infant and toddler must be removed from the crib, playpen or cot and held or placed in an appropriate chair for feeding.

Re: major daycare problem
it depends on your comfort level- if you trust what they are saying/doing.
My daycare doesnt prop bottles. they staff more than the required ratio from the state. If its feeding time, if need be they pull someone from another room to get the baby fed......
Now, that 1 year old, i know there are babies in his room that havent turned 1 yet and the parents are the kid on a sippy cup. So if they are propping it- maybe the kids trying to be weaned off hand feedings.
