BTW...I never had a Regents Diploma and it pi$$ed the hell out my mom. Im such a failure
This drove my mom nuts too!!! She sent me to summer school just so I could pass my regents!!! Didn't happen anyway- I didn't have a prayer for passing the math regents.
I didnt fail any tests. I just never took enough Regents classes to qualify. It wasnt a requirement back then and frankly, it didnt matter because I went to my first choice of schools. It was a private university.

Oh I hope you didn't think that's what I assumed! I'M the true failure here- and it wasn't just math either.
Didn't make a difference with me when it came to college anyway- I was a performing arts major! I turned out just fine!

Re: Making change - an observation and commentary
funny you bring up the demise of basic education....
I just had a debate with an undergrad yesterday. he was annoyed that a prof wouldn't post his notes online for a class. I asked why he needed them, and he said he was late.
I said the prof is merely attempting to build character in his students (punctuality, note taking skills...), and he rebutted that he was just making life difficult, and these things are not important.
my retort: well, LIFE is difficult. Might as well get used to it now!
of course, he'll be one of those fresh out of school & looking for a six figure salary.
eventually, life bites them on the bum. and I just watch it happen and

Re: Making change - an observation and commentary
tell me about it!
DH and I went to Wendy's on Saturday and the total was $10 and some change. DH handed the cashier a $20 bill and I then handed him the exact change and the cashier just stood there and paused for a few seconds, then became so flustered that he forgot to give us our $10 change back

Posted by Goldi0218 I found this rather sad knowing that making change to $1 is about a 3rd grade skill.
It's actually a 1st grade skill. My son is 6 and he just finished a unit on coins and making change, etc..
The fact that my kid has learned this tells me that it IS being taught... but perhaps it is being taught too soon and not being reinforced? We are in such a hurry to get the basics done so we can move them on to calculators and computers that we don't spend enough time letting them really absorb the basics. Maybe?
I stand corrected. Coins may be a first grade skill. I am not so sure about change from a 20, 50 and 100 dollar bill but you may be right. Certain grade levels teach. Alternate grade levels reinforce and extend.
I wasn't trying to correct you.. sorry if it seemed that way.
I was actually saying that it is taught very early and perhaps that is why it doesn't stick?
I wonder if they do 'bills' as a math unit at all. I think the change is usually the 'hardest' part in money - learning which little coins make up a dollar. I think everything else is kind of basic math.. 100 less 20 is the same whether you are talking about dollars or peas or days of the year.
My girlfriend teaches high school math and even in her remedial classes they use calculators.

Re: Making change - an observation and commentary
it's the counting back change that irks me.
If the total is 12.15 and I give you $20, then you start with giving me back 85 cents, that makes 13, then 2 singles which make $15 and then a $5 which makes $20.
That's how it's supposed to be done. It's a dying art.

Computers and fancy little hand-held gadgets...while making our lives a lot less complicated, they've also managed to make our brains work a lot less.
How many of us can remember more than, let's say, five telephone numbers stored in our cell phones?

MY thoughts EXACTLY...these kids need to take and ACCEPT RESPONSIBILTY. That is the problem with most of these high school students, and if they dont want to, then they call crying or should I now say "texting" home to mommy and daddy and then they call the school, and now it bites us teachers in the B U T T, and WE look like the idiots

People like my parents who never got used to using the stored numbers can remember all the numbers in their phones.

A few years ago I applied for a job as a bank teller. they gave a short math test that involved addition, subtraction, division and multiplication of numbers as well as "How much change" situations. We were GIVEN a four function calculator. 2/3 of the people in the room with me FAILED the test.
It was probably a 4th grade level test WITHOUT the use of calculator.
Wow that is SAD! I had to take one with no calculator, I think I got like 1 wrong.
I learned about change a long time ago working the concession stand at my elementary school.

Re: Making change - an observation and commentary
I think we are making a lot of generalizations about "these kids today". I think every generation has their share of entitled, lazy and/or poorly educated people and I am sure when we were in high school there were many adults shaking their heads and saying "these kids today".
All subsequent generations have advantages that the previous generations did not have and somehow also go on to the great and amazing things.
I know quite a few high schoolers and college kids today who happen to be smart and conscientious and I do not believe they are the exception.
Every generation has had their fair share of "idiots" ...lets not generalize

Ditto. I have a memory for numbers. Phone numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers, membership numbers. I don't even have to TRY to remember them, I just do. I am the Asian Rain Man.

Some of us aren't generalizing. We are out there in the trenches teaching the children. We know from first hand experience.

Re: Making change - an observation and commentary
soooo interesting that you posted this!! i was at king kullen tonight and there were TWO kids working a cash register. the woman in front of me bought a book of stamps - $8.20
she gave them a $20 and a quarter.
it took them at least a full minute of standing there trying to figure out the change (poor kids, the drawer was already open and they couldn't punch it into the register ) before the lady was like, "it's $12.05"
and this was an easy one!! and there were TWO people who could have figured this out.

Re: Making change - an observation and commentary
tonight at Duane Reade..the total was $15.45. I gave the girl $20.45.
She already had the register open and keyed in $20.00 and couldn't figure it out.
