Making eye round roast in a crock pot

Would you brown the meat beforehand or just put it in?

Re: Making eye round roast in a crock pot

I would definitely brown the meat, which is why I never bother with the crock pot Chat Icon

if i have to take the time to brown it before hand, it doesn't seem helpful to me. I just make those kinds of things on the weekends. plus, how do you get the lovely bits from the bottom of the cook pan into the slow cooker????

the only way I would do it is if I had the All Clad slow cooker, which you can use the insert on the stove to brown directly in there.

I am sure I am no help Chat Icon Chat Icon

I season and brown it first. Seal it and give it that lovely color.

Actually, what I am going to do is brown the meat in the pan and then deglaze with wine or stock, and save that and add it to the crock pot. So no waste Chat Icon

Thanks to you both!!

I just made a roast and did not brown it beforehand. I layered the vegetables in the bottom, put the roast on top, then only added 1/4 cup of water, which pooled around the veggies and didn't really touch the meat. I cooked it on low for 10 hours and it was PERFECT. Crunchy on the outside, fork tender on the inside.

(I read online that you can cook it without water only if it's cooked on low)

Nope, I would just pop it in the crockpot and switch it on. IMO browning your meat does nothing.
