Mammography

Ladies that have had them, at what age did you start getting them, i have always heard you should start at age 40 unless you know you have a higher risk,
a friend says now she heard you should go at 35,
i think she is being a little paranoid because a close friend was recently diagnosed with breast cancer (she's 47)
so when did you ladies first go

Re: Mammography

My doctor recommended I get one now - I'll be 37 in two months. I had it done in November.

Re: Mammography

i had my first at 29 because i found a lump...ended up having a lumpectomy and now go every 6 months.

granted, my mother had severe breast cancer and therefore they would have recommened once a year starting at 30.

women with no history of breast cancer should be going once a year at 40 and should be getting a breast check with the gyno. during yearly exams before 40. if you have significant history (mom, sister or mother's sister had breast cancer) you should be going from age 30.

I went at 31. I will have to go every year for the rest of my life. My grandmother, my mother and Aunt all have had breast cancer.

Re: Mammography

My baseline was at 37. They found an abnormality and I had a lumpectomy. I don't have a family history. Every six months I get a sonogram. Every year a mammogram.

Re: Mammography

I'm 31 and adopted so I just went for my first mammo. I wanted to just be on the safe side since I don't know much medical history.

Re: Mammography

I have a family history, I should have gone at 35, but had my baseline at 38. It does hurt a bit, but it is over pretty quickly.

I got my first mammo just before my 37th birthday. The dr sent me because she noticed a mass that turned out to be a lymphnode
