Mark Lewis grievance
For those of you who grieved your taxes through Mark Lewis, did you have to pay the appraisal and court fee for a won case? I thought we would only have to pay 50% of the reduction in taxes?
Thanks

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
good question...
do you only get the grievance for one year? so if you get a reduction this year (2009) for 1000.00 do you get that reduction for 2010 as well? or does it go right back up to where it was prior to grieving?

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
I just won a couple of months ago.
You only pay 50% of the reduction.
No you don't get the reduction for one year. The reduction is the reduction. You can grieve you taxes every single year if you want. But there is no saying they will come downe every year. Of course taxes always go up, but that reduction is still in place. I hope that makes sense.

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
yes ... it makes sense now.
i was just talking to my boss about it and he explained that you grieve the assessed value.
the catch is that the county doesn't raise it's tax rate per assessed value after they drop your assess value.

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
I just read the agreement and it does say that you have to pay the appraisal and court fee.
I'm upset because I got a very small reduction and have to pay these other fees on top of the 50%. I really don't think I will see any difference in my taxes because I know they have gone up. So I feel like I'm paying for nothing.

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
Question, why not use the appraisal you had to get when you purchased the home? I was going to do this as soon as we close or you need to get a new one?

We used Mark Lewis and just had to pay the 50% of the reduction. We didn't have an appraisal on our house or have to pay for the court fee.

Maybe your reduction was bigger so they waived the fees. I don't remeber reading it in the original agreement I signed but if I go to the website, it is listed in the fee section.

You can if it's been within a year. My appraisal came in higher than our purchase price so I wouldn't want them to use it anyway.

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
I used Mark Lewis. I live in Farmingdale but I am on the border and in Babylon Township. Babylon denied my grievance, which is crazy because my taxes are so high. Mark Lewis sent me a letter saying that they were taking my claim to court. And that it is common for them to do so. The letter also stated that Mark Lewis would pay the court fees and I wouldn't be charged anything additional.

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
I work in the industry and have for over 10 years. My advise is DO NOT USE a tax grievance company. Use an attorney. You will pay the same fee and get better advice. There are several reputable firms out there that will do this for you rather than a tax grievance factory. Trust me - you get what you pay for.

Re: Mark Lewis grievance
Mill, so true, unfortunately we went through mark lewis before out attorney called and offered to do it for a MUCH cheaper price
We also lost our grievance - I wish i knew why! I am assuming we'll win after he fights it, since i really have NO clue why we wouldn't get it.
