Maternity Leave/Insurance
I can't wait until I can be on this board for real...
Ok so I have another question. Can you buy disability insurance to cover your matternity leave? Has anyone done this? I will only get NYS for 6-8 wks because I have a small company and $170 a week won't pay my mortgage.
I'm just trying to figure out how the heck I can afford to not work for a few weeks.
TIA!

Well, you can try Aflac. I believe you have to have the policy 3 months BEFORE you get pregnant to get maternity benefits.
I am not sure what they pay out, but it is worth it to look into.

I'm not sure but I do know that most disability policies have a waiting period and a pre-existing condition clause so if you are already PG, it wouldn't be covered.

This is true. It happened to a friend of mine. She was not PG when she signed up for the policy but by the time they processed everything and started taking payroll deductions, she was PG and they denied her benefits after 9 months of paying!
I had taken out a short term disability policy long before I got PG with my DD. They only pay I think 60% of your salary, but it is non-taxed (because your insurance premium is paid after taxes) so between that and the NYS disability it is usually pretty close to your full check.
