me and my rice cooker had a fight...
and the rice cooker won...twice! I have no clue what I'm doing wrong. The first time I used it I made fried rice in it and the rice wasn't cooked. Now tonight I tried using it again and the water keeps boiling over! I'm only making 1 cup of rice (using the rice maker measuring cup) and I added 2.5 cups of water. The first time I used 1 3/4 cup of chicken broth. Is it me?

Re: me and my rice cooker had a fight...
I'm sorry you're losing the battle with your rice cooker! Do you rinse your rice with water? I rinse my rice maybe 4 or 5 times to get out as much of the excess starch as possible, and then add the correct amount of water to the pot. Also, the ratio of water to rice depends on the type of grain you're using. I usually make basmati rice which is 2 "rice cooker cups" of water to 1 "rice cooker cup" of rice. The manual to your cooker should tell you what ratio of rice-to-water to use depending on the grain.
When my old cooker started bubbling, MIL sprayed the edge of the lid and pot with Pam to form a seal so that nothing could bubble out. She told me olive oil would work in place of pam. It worked out pretty well.
After a while, I decided maybe it was time for me to get a better rice cooker so I got this Zojirushi and it works amazing! It's a small one, but it works for my family.

Thank you! I googled why water bubbles over in a rice cooker and they recommended adding oil to the water which helped. I did follow the manual for the correct amounts of water to use so I'm not sure why my rice wasn't cooked the first time. It's a fairly expensive rice cooker so I'm going to keep it and continue the battle.

Re: me and my rice cooker had a fight...
I've never used a rice cooker but I'm Armenian and we live on rice, well pilaf actually
It's 2 cups of water (I use chicken broth) to 1 cup of rice. I don't know if it's telling you to add extra water because of the cooker??? Brown rice takes in more liquid so that may be the measure for that.

I would also call the manufacturer and ask why it's happening. Maybe they can do something for you, especially if it's pretty new.

Re: me and my rice cooker had a fight...
I usually use 1 1/2 cup of water for every cup of rice. I rinse my rice and put a little bit of salt in the water ... My rice cooker is like 6 yrs old.
