menu planning question from a noobie

ok, so this year, i've been working really hard to get better at shopping/planning/cooking for my family.

i do see quite a few improvements in how i handle this part of our lives... but i still have far to go

my question today is:
what is the step-by-step process you go through when putting the supermarket sales circular together with a plan for meals for a week?

i hope that made sense Chat Icon

Re: menu planning question from a noobie

I try to plan for....

3 poultry
1 meat
1 fish/seafood
1 "other"

then I will look at the circulars to see what's on sale that week to help inspire the meals/sides. So if I see chicken thighs, ground turkey and frozen shrimp on sale... I know I'll plan some meals around that. I look at the produce too... so if broccoli, lemons, cucumber and sweet potatoes are on sale, I'll plan around that too.

SO meals I might come up with from those are:

turkey burgers with sweet potato fries
lemon & garlic roasted chicken thighs with burnt broccoli
grilled shrimp over salad

etc.... does that help?

I think about the stuff I usually make and look in the circulars.

Granted, I don't cook as often as I should. We have to get better at that.

Her burnt broccoli recipe is amazing!!! I tried it last night...sooo good. do a search for burnt broccoli and you should see it, or she can give it to you. I have the recipe at home. Very easy and sooo yummy.

With menus, my hubby likes to grocery shop and menu plan while in the store. He looks to see what is on sale. Seems to be a smart way.

I like to make my menu first, so I have the list ready and then grocery shop. I might change it for what's on sale.

I try to have mostly chicken...1 pork... 1 ground beef or red meat...1 pasta
