Need Some Help Planning a Dinner Menu for a Party Tomorrow

I could use some help planning a menu for a dinner party I having tomorrow.

We're having my family over (12 people). They're arriving around 2-2:30pm so I'm figuring to put out a cheese and veggie platter before the main course to have with cocktails.

The trouble I'm having is choosing a main course.I'm not in the mood to do the same old barbecue (hamburgers, hotdogs, sausage, etc.) but I'm also not looking to spend all day in the kitchen. A) it's my birthday and B) it's going to be pretty warm tomorrow and we don't have central AC so it can get pretty hot in the kitchen.

I thought about making a pork roast but I don't think I've ever cooked one for this many people so I'm not sure how many pounds to buy. I know it's cooked in the oven but I'm thinking it's also something I could throw it in the oven and leave it alone.

As for my cooking level...I'm pretty good and willing to try new recipes.

Any help would be appreicated!!!

Thanks!!!

Re: Need Some Help Planning a Dinner Menu for a Party Tomorrow

why don;t you grill some pizza?

You make the dough in the oven until it's not quite done-- then throw it on the BBQ for the grill marks, and put all the fixin's on...

You can make a bunch of different varieties and a lot of the prep work can be done before anyone comes over.

Oh ladies those are both great ideas!!! My nephew (6) and neice (4) will be here so the pizza maybe a great idea for them.

Two questions...

Where do I get the dough and how do I cook it. (ie. temp, lenght of time to cook, etc.)

Thanks!!! Chat Icon

I have never done this- but my mom does all the time. I think she buys pre-made pizza dough at Trader Joes-- or just at the supermarket-- it comes in a plastic bag of sorts. She bakes the "pizza shells' ahead of time in the oven, and when you are ready for the grill-- they just go out and the fixins are put on.

ETA-- the package I am sure will have cooking instructions. I would cook it until it's done, but not golden yet since you will be finishing it off on the grill.

Ok, I'll come clean. YES my birthday was yesterday, but unfortunately, my family doesn't live locally (my sister and BIL live in CT) so I'm actually celebrating it with them tomorrow.

Oh and yeah, I'm an AW so since my b-day is close to the weekend and holiday, I milk it for all it's worth!!! Chat Icon

I'm cooking with my hubby's help. He offered to do it all but that means barbecue. His skills are more limited than mine. Chat Icon Unfortunately, I'm just not in the mood for the traditional burgers and dogs so hence, I'm cooking! Chat Icon

I don't mind really and as Roro pointed out, TECHNICALLY it's NOT my b-day as alas it was really yesterday! Chat Icon

How about Shish Kebob? You can do all different kinds... and kids LOOOOVE fruit kebobs. As long as they aren't young enough to skewer their mouths.

I would also consider a menu like...

Marinated and Grilled portobello mushrooms and veggie crudite for appetizers.

A salad of baby field greens with strawberry basil vinegarette.

Grilled steaks with Montreal seasoning. You don't need one per person - get a few nice steaks and slice them up to serve a crowd.

Corn on the cob

Garden tomatoes

Sauteed asparagus with garlic and oil

And chocolate cake for dessert.

And French martinis to drink.

shish kabobs are an awesome idea. We made them last sunday.

We marinated chunks of beef and chicken and then we had potaoes (whole canned), mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers etc...

Best part is we have a bunch of the baskets for them so we didnt even have to put them on sticks...

on the rt of the pic.
