Mercy vs. South Nassau
I delivered DD at Mercy 3 1/2 years ago and had a good experience. I am now pregnant with twins and will be delivering there as well. However, I keep hearing great things about South Nassau. Does anyone know how the two NICU's? I have a feeling these babies will be slightly premature, so that is obviously a priority. TIA

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
South Nassau for sure - There NICU is higher rated and if there is any problem they will be sent over to Winthrop

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I was very happy with my two deliveries at South Nassau. The private rooms are great and the L&D staff was awesome.

Mercy vs. South Nassau
South Nassau NICU is lower its level 2 where as Mercy is level 3. More than likely if babies are born before 34 weeks they will more than likely move them to Winthrop if they are preemies and u deliver at South Nassau

Mercy vs. South Nassau
My son was in NICU at Mercy and I can't say enough good things about the NICU unit. They were wonderful with him and us. Mercy's NICU unit was also rated as a 99% infection free environment and has won many awards. Plus I had a private room, and didn't pay anything extra for it. I had a wonderful experience at Mercy and would definitely deliver there again.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I've delivered at both & used both NICU but take it from a preemie mom, Mercy is your better choice on that point alone. I was originally scheduled.to go to South Nassau with #2 but when I went into labor at 32 weeks, I was sent to Mercy & honestly was not happy. After the birth though, I was happy its where I went bc my DS had to go immediately into the NICU. I was informed that even though DS did not have real.complications, if born at South Nassau, he would have immediately been.transferred to LIJ. Now since I had a section, I would have remained in South Nassau for 5 days with out my baby boy .
I can't say enough.about the NICU at Mercy. All the nurses were fantastic & the drs were even better. DS stayed there for 4 weeks & honestly the care he received was super. I was not thrilled with.the maternity ward or nurses compared to south nassau. I found Mercy to be extremely dirty & the nurses could not be bothered but I did also have s private room that I did not pay extra for. Looking back 2 years later, I still would have gone to Mercy for my DS sake alone.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
Mercy has a higher level NICU. I delivered at South Nassau at 30 weeks and the nurses and staff were very nice. However, after 3 weeks in the NICU, DS became sick and they didn't have the capability to take care of him. He had to be transferred. I think if you are at a higher risk of delivering early, you should strongly take into consideration the level of the NICU. You don't want to have to have a small baby transferred between hospitals - it was very stressful!
Good luck!

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I just delivered at Mercy in July (also delivered there in 2008) and had a fantastic experience both times!

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I had a wonderful experience at South Nassau, but that was with my DD only being observed in the NICU for a few hours, not being admitted to it. If I knew in advance that there was a good chance of my DC being admitted to the NICU, I would go to whichever hospital had the highest level NICU, which in this case in Mercy.
