Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
And they would have to big drastic moves...big $$$$ cuz they need closer's....they won't make it without at least one good and reliable closer....

Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
The closer role does not need to be addressed THIS season. Teams can get to the WS with just an "average" closer.
See... St. Louis (Izzy)... Anaheim (before K-Rod)... Arizona (B.Kim *laugh*)... Florida (Looper/Urbina).
The key though is... to have a strong supporting cast in your bullpen.
In fact... in the last five years... the only two WS teams that had a *good* closer was NYY and Boston. Everyone else got there with a "serviceable" closer at best.
But next season its new game... and hopefully will lead to BJ Ryan being a NY Met.

Yes it does need to be addressed now. Our closers are not even average. They are below average...

Show me a closer thats readily available to get this season and i'll change my stance on this.

sorry i have to disagree...You may be able to get to the WS without a great closer (although my feeling is it will not be this year for the Mets)
BUT on the off chance that they DO make it ...they will CERTAINLY SHOULD have a great closer to win it. HOW neauseating it would be if you made it to lose AGAIN.

Look at the last four seasons WS series.
2004 Boston - Foulke (very good closer) St. Louis - Izzy (average closer)
2003 Florida - Looper/Urbina (both average closers) Yanks - Rivera (excellent closer)
2002 Anaheim - Percival (decent closer) San Francisco - Nen (decent closer)
2001 Arizona - B.Kim (laugh) Yankees - Rivera (excellent closer)
As you can see... 3 out of 4 teams that won the WS did not have "lights out" closers. And more than half the teams that made it didn't have a "lights out" closer either.
The only two guys I considered "lights out" in this was Rivera and Foulke. And Rivera's Yankees didn't even win the WS BOTH times they were in it.
Even in 2005... most likely it will be St. Louis again with Izzy... and Izzy is definitely not "lights out" material.
Who knows who will make it from the AL... but I think you get my drift.
You do NOT need a "lights out" closer to win a WS... and right now the Mets need to address MANY other needs besides the closer role.

Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
IMO you CANNOT compare those teams to the Mets! If the Mets make it there they will need EVERY OUNCE of excellent playing they can get..
IMO the COULDN"T afford to have a so so closer! and i continue to disagree...because aside for when Pedro is pitching, the Mets will get lit up like a Christmas Tree. Even the Yanks did much better hitting agaist him this last series than i expected.
They need another pitcher and a closer. Pedro can't be the whole team

ah red, i agreed with you up until this:
"because aside for when Pedro is pitching, the Mets will get lit up like a Christmas Tree."
Pedro is great, but we also have Benson and Glavine (Glavine has been coming around of late).

Red:
You continue to miss my point.
I never said the Mets were the lock to make the WS. Why do you keep mentioning the Mets?
I am saying that you do not need a lights out closer to win a WS. NO team needs it.
As far as the Mets go... and since you brought up the pitching... frankly their starting staff is better than the Yanks... bar none. Don't believe me? Look at the stats before you say anything.
The Mets starting pitching does not need to be addressed.
The Mets need to address either a bat upgrade at 1B or 2B... and another more reliable arm in the bullpen (lefty).

Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
I keep mentioning the Mets because that is what this conversation was about...The Mets needing a good closer. And i still think that they DEFINITELY need one and IS essential if they make the play-offs or WS.
I am not denying the Mets pitching staff. They are decent (YES! better than the Yanks!). IMO Decent doesn't cut it. Without Pedro i would fear them walking into any play series much less a WS or even a subway series

Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
Well... fine I will respectfully disagree with you then.
Watching the Mets day after day... they have bigger issues to address than the closer.
And like I told Bedda.... show me a better closer thats AVAILABLE than what the Mets have... and I will change my stance on this.
If you can't show me a better closer thats available THIS season... its a moot debate.
I know the Mets will address the closer issue after the season is over... but frankly it cannot be addressed now.

Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
And frankly... take Pedro out of the picture... maybe you don't think it... but I feel pretty good to have Benson and Zambrano as my #2 and #3 starters.
I will put them up against ANY TEAM's #2 and #3 and feel pretty good most of the time knowing we have good chance to win that game.
Hell... right now Glavine is our #4 starter! Says alot about the depth of the Mets starting pitching.

Well this is TRUE..At this point in time no there is nobody to really pick up...
And that is unfortunate...

Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
yeah, good closers are a rare breed. It's the age old problem. Benitez stunk. Looper stinks.
Trade them we say Sign someone else we say
Problem is, there IS no one else.

Re: Mets Take 3 out of 4 from Nationals
The only true closer thats probably available is Danny Baez from Tampa Bay.
And even though he has good stuff with a decent ERA.... he leads the league in blown saves!
I would still take him on the Mets though. Either get Baez in a trade this year... or get BJ Ryan from the O's in free agency.
