Milk allergy and BFing
We just found out that our son has a milk protein allergy and a slight allergy to soy but we are not sure to what extent is the soy allergy is as he is an exclusively breast feed baby. We found out about his milk allergy when I started supplementing him occasionally with a formula bottle.
I am BFing and his ped has suggested to switch him to formula only or to cut dairy completely out of my diet. I tried the alimentum today and boy does he not like it. When I gave him formula in the past he loved it and drank it with no problem.
I am looking for suggestions as to what to do. I am confused about stopping BFing because I enjoy our time together. I don’t know to what extent I have to stop the entire dairy intake is it just milk, chesses and yogurt or is it all products that contain milk such as bread and pastries. I have been eating dairy regularly for the past 6 months but yesterday I ate some cheese and breast feed him and he broke out in hives.
Also we have just been eating cereal and I am starting food in a couple of weeks so what do I have to look for in the ingredients, is it just milk or is there another wording that I have to look out for.
Is there any other advice from milk allergy mom, TIA

Re: Milk allergy and BFing
We discovered that DD had a dairy/egg allergy at 6 months also and I EBF. What I did per the allergist was start by cutting out all obvious dairy. So no milk, no eggs, yogurt, ice cream, cheese, butter, cream. I am not gonna lie, it was a hard adjust for me but after 2 weeks I got use to it and DD will be 11 months next week. She also had a slight soy allergy but she out grew that. DD is able to eat foods that have milk and egg products in it because it is cooked. Some children have severe allergies and can't have any of the protiens.
It's really just trial and error. I read it can take up to 3 weeks for the proteins to completely leave your body. I would also get the dosage amount for your DC for benedyrl and keep that on hand. I put some romano cheese (sheeps milk) on dd's pasta and not only did she break out in hives her lip swelled so I always make sure I that on hand.
I was never a big milk drinker and really only used it for coffee but I got use to non-dairy creamer. Probably the most annoying thing is when people forget that you can't have dairy. Their is also an ice cream brand called SoDelious which tastes like fat free icecream. I am not sure if they sell it everywhere by the supermarket I use does.
Like I said the first 2 weeks are the hardes and I found that I craved every type of dairy product out their but once I got past it I was fine.

Re: Milk allergy and BFing
I had to cut ALL dairy out of my diet in the beginning. It was difficult, but made a world of difference.
Even now still BFing at 1 yr, DD is affected when I drink milk...but she's ok drinking it herself...it's very strange.
And yes, it does take a while for the dairy proteins to leave your body.

Re: Milk allergy and BFing
DD hated Alimentum. She only lasted about 18hrs on it. She was taking in so little of it that I broke down and went back to EBF. As a cheese and dairy lover giving up dairy was extremely difficult but manageable. There are a lot of dairy substitures nowadays, you just have to be a little creative.
I used this website as a reference: Go Dairy Free

You can mix it but if you plan to continue to BF you still need to cut out the dairy.
My ped had suggested Neocate to me if I wanted to FF but I stuck out BF.

Re: Milk allergy and BFing
I went dairy/soy free for a year and EBF.
it seems sooooooo hard at first, but just take it day by day.
you know what? you are going to have a baby who is going to go on table foods anyway, so its a great crash course in living without since he can't have it.
they almost always grow out of it by the time they hit 18 mos.
fm me anytime all the time.
this was my life and passion for a year. if you want to do it, you can.

Thats confusing to me.
Unless you plan on cutting out all dairy from your diet, mixing Neocate into breastmilk defeats the purpose of Neocate.

Re: Milk allergy and BFing
I BF DD2 - Until we learned she had a milk allergy..... along with some other food allergies. It was to the point that nutrionally it wan't good for me to cut out all of those foods, so we put her on Nutramigen. That was hard because I couldn't BF DD1 either for the same reasons...
