Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
I know DD is only a week old but since my milk came in, she's had a few bouts of extreme gassiness and seems to be in pain. It's not every feeding, though. Mylicon does seem to help a bit.
This morning she threw up a LOT - everything from the feeding she had just had. I swear it was like The Exorcist.
The only thing I consistently have every day is coffee, and I put 1/2 and 1/2 in it, pretty much the only time I have dairy. Is it possible she is having a reaction to that? Her gassiness does seem to strike at the same time every day - late morning, the feeding after I've had my coffee.
I know it could very well be something else, but I just want to be prepared.
She has cried a couple of times during eating, but I don't know if that is a possible reflux issue or just overtiredness.

I did not BF, but with DS we noticed it around 3 weeks. We then switched to soy, then around 5 weeks got swtiched to nutramigen.

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
3 weeks old. it was like a light switch. it was horrilbe..coughing, gagging, wheezing, and sneezing..and crying around the clock..the hardest time of my life..if you think it could be an allergy, def give your ped a stool sample to make sure there is no blood in the stool..my ds is also allergic to soy so he is on a special formula. your dc could also have reflux which my son has as well..its under control now but this household has been through a very rough time these past 5 months. fm me if you have any other questions. good luck!

about 3 weeks , maybe a bit less here too. She started freaking out during feedings, and after. Seemed like every feeding was hurting her so badly!

There was never any consistency to it - that's why I felt for the longest time it wasn't a milk allergy because she wouldn't have any reaction to dairy for at least a few days. But, she was getting blood in her diapers every few weeks - I finally took her to the GI specialist who said it was likely a milk protein allergy - we switched her to nutramigen and all of her symptoms disappeared overnight

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
My dd was the same way but it was not a milk allergy. I had a forceful letdown. I have the most milk in the morning so it was always the worst after her morning feeding. At times she would fountain and all the milk would go everywhere. She would get real gassy too from gulping the milk when she would try to keep up with the flow. Other times she would choke if she couldn't keep up.

You know, this could very well be it, since I am the same way as you in terms of my supply and let down. I also totally forgot, DS was very gassy as well for the first 3 weeks and then got better, maybe its just a newborn thing? (Hayley you totally reminded me of this, thank you!)

For the next few nursing sessions LEAN BACK when you nurse so your letdown isn't as fast and forceful....

Is it possible it's the coffee?

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
at not quite 2 weeks, she had blood in her stool. reflux was more recent - btw 7 and 8 weeks - she was fighting feedings but begging for food constantly, just not eating very much unless it had been a few hours since her last feeding. reflux babies do this to wash down the acid so that's how we figured it out.

I've got to say before you start cutting dairy out of your diet you should definitely switch to decaf or get rid of the coffee. Both my DDs were pretty sensitive to the stuff.

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
kj started showing signs at about 6 weeks old...he was miserable, arching his back, swatting at the bottle, sucking hard and then breaking suction over and over again
he never spit up but was diagnosed with silent reflux and a milk allergy

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
I remember when Ryan was about 6/8 days old he started spitting up after EVERY feeding. And DH is lactose intolerant so I started to become nervous of a milk allergy.
I decided to just keep going full force with BFing and trying to avoid gassy foods (greens like broccoli) and it got better.
By around 4 weeks I was back to eating whatever I wanted including all milk/dairy products.
I attributed Ryan's belly issues to just be newborn issues and assumed it was just his little body adjusting to his new environment.

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
Nina- at around 4 weeks, I cut out all dairy and was still able to EBF.
Luke- Right away! It was like I was torturing him. His allergy is so bad that I stopped BF and he is on Hypoallergenic Form.

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
After about a month. I also had a forceful letdown so I attributed the problems to that. Finally I noticed the correlation with dairy and had his stool tested. It was positive for blood. Cutting all dairy helped, but not fully so the I cut soy and he was completely better.

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
We didn't realize it was a milk protein allergy until 2 or 3 months old but there were so many other issues going on that it was the last issue to be figured out.
Milk protein is in everything. You need to read every label you are probably eating more dairy then you think. Look for stuff with casein - that is the milk protein.
I would first eliminate the coffee. Then the dairy. It will take a few days to get the milk out of your system too.

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
About 1 wk. When my BM came in. Of course I was eating oatmeal with milk everyday. It wasn't diagnosed until she was almost 3 months. If you feel DC may have it just go to Ped GI its a simple stool test

Re: Milk protein allergy - how soon did you see signs?
I would definitely cut out the coffee before you cut out the dairy. Coffee always bothers DS. Like a PP mentioned it could be the letdown issue too. I have a fast letdown and DS would choke and take in a lot of air, making him gassy.

Day 1
Same here ! She would projectile all over the place. She could only sleep in her carseat because she would choke if she was laying down ,and I would have to lean her over my leg and smack her back to get her to cough it up and breathe ,she was also gassy and constantly crying .Once I started using soy ...what a difference . I also noticed at 6 months when my MIL gave her ice cream ,she broke out in hives all over her face
