milk protein allergy question re: formulas
Soy formula or a hypoallergenic?? WHY?
Our ped said to switch to soy formula at the 2 mth visit but she had no samples in the office, so she gave me nutramigen and he seems to be doing well on it....still a little gassy at times but nearly as bad as he was those first few weeks.
She also said when I was done with the samples, to try the soy formula but a friend suggested that since he was doing well on the nutramigen, to just stick with it.
now I'm questioning it....

Re: milk protein allergy question re: formulas
Was your son allergic to the milk based one? Did he have blood in his stool? We had this with Jake and we tried all the formulas out there and only Nutrmitgen seems to help him. I say if it is working don't switch. Did you get your insurance company to help pay for the Nutramitgen?

Re: milk protein allergy question re: formulas
Yes insurance is covering most of the cost. DS had diarrhea for over a month while BF and supplementing with Gentlease.
I was just wondering since the Dr had said try soy first but gave me nutramigen since she had no soy samples

Re: milk protein allergy question re: formulas
For me it would depend on how severe Paul's case was and how much I trusted my ped. I trust mine completely, but I've posted before that the doctor is married to my best friend's sibling. Since the Nutramigen is being covered, the cost of the soy formula would be a consideration too.
Andy was initially diagnosed with a severe milk protein allergy due to atopic dermatitis - basically a horrible case of eczema all over his body that only responds to steroids - and bloody mucus in his stool.
At that point we were switched to Nutramigen as my ped feels like it's not worth switching to soy formula when dealing with a severe allergy since the odds were extremely high he'd be allergic to soy as well. He still had the dermatitis and bloody mucus, so we had to go to Neocate. He still has the dermatits, no where near as bad as it was, and he was severely constipated on the Neocate in the beginning.
We've since had to see an allergist b/c we suspected other food allergies due to the dermatitis lingering so long. He has severe allergies to milk and milk protein, the mik protein rarely shows up on a skin test, that's how severe it is.
