Miralax? UPDATE -- she threw up!

DD hasn't had a bowel movement in about 4-5 days. She is normally very regular, going every 1-2 days. She is complaining that her tummy hurts and when she tries to go she is unable to go.

She is 6 years old so we tried a senna-tab but she was unable to swallow the pill. That was last night before bed. We were going to go that route becuase it is supposed to work overnight.

Now I just went to get her Miralax since she will be able to drink that.

My question is...how long does it take to work? I don't want her to explode in school tomorrow! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Miralax?

The best thing about Miralax is that it won't make her explode and have to go urgently. It works to soften things up and makes it easier to go.

I had DS on it last summer (when he just turned 7). I told him it was vitamin powder. Chat Icon I mixed it in his drink in the morning, usually his juice with breakfast. It does take a few minutes to dissolve. But it has no taste. He got one capful a day.

I can't remember how long it took to start working. But there were no crazy incidents and he got himself back to a normal schedule in less than 2 weeks.

Re: Miralax?

She wont explode... Like PP, it will just really soften her up so when she feels like she might have to go, it will all come out very easily... I know a very young girl who has had this issue pretty much her whole life and is on miralax everyday... It wont hurt her and it wont make her miss the toilet or get embarrassed

Re: Miralax?

Well, after complaining that she had a belly ache all yesterday and this morning....

I went and got her Miralax and she just drank water that had a capful mixed in.

5 minutes later she just threw it all up all over the living room rug. Chat Icon

So I don't know what to do! Does she have a stomach virus? Is it from the constipation?

If it is a stomach virus she would probably just need to let it run it's course.

If it is extreme constipation then I feel like I need to take her to PM Pediatrics.

They open at 12.

Do I just take her either way?

I don't think there is anything they are going to do for the constipation and definitely not a stomach virus. Will she do prune juice or prunes?

There is a stomach virus going around in DS's school, so it could be that! AS far as the constipation, I think Miralax is the best option. I would wait it out and try it again tomorrow, I honestly don't think the Miralax would make her throw up!

I would call the ped. Sounds like it is related to the constipation. What about a suppository or enema?

Re: Miralax? UPDATE -- she threw up!

She might have thrown up from a glass of water if her stomach was empty.

Miralax wont make her have to go urgently. My dd was on it for almost 2 years.Chat Icon But it never made her go urgently, just softens up the stool so it passes easily.

If she threw it up, I am not sure I would repeat the dose (which means she wont go tomorrow). Generally Miralax takes about one day to work.

DS has dealt with major constipation issues. The Miralax will work eventually if you can get her to try again. Give it in a yummy drink so she doesn't notice it. Also I swear by pears! A few times DS was constipated and he ate a pear he pooped literally within the hour. Good luck!

Re: Miralax? UPDATE -- she threw up!

Highly doubt the miralax itself made her throw up... Like PP said, it could have been too much water for her... You can try again tomorrow in a much smaller amt of water or slip it into juice... Pear juice works fabulous for the constipation... If she'll drink it...
