But I understand WHY some people may be afraid. You never know how a strange dog is being raised. Especially a strange dog that already has a reputation.
Understood and I respect that. I agree with you as we all have our fears and things that happened in the past but it's the dumb ignorant comments that get me.

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs
DH and i had a rottie that was about 65, 70 lbs... not scary looking at all, and the BIGGEST mush you could want in a pet.
my other dog (that lives with my parents) is an 85lbs chow/shepherd mix that is as dumb as a doorknob, but looks relatively harmless - fluffy and cute.
my SIL has a cockapoo that is no more than 10lbs.
guess which one bit a friend of mine several years ago? and guess which one has bitten ME several times???
it's NOT about the size of the dog - its about the training!! i think the bigger the dog, the better... i am sorry that you got all those rude comments

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs
Posted by MissJones HOWEVER, that does not mean I am not wary of strange dogs. I know that underneath all that girth is most likely a big ball of mush. But I am still cautious around strange dogs. It's all in how they are raised. But I understand WHY some people may be afraid. You never know how a strange dog is being raised. Especially a strange dog that already has a reputation.
You should be that way with ALL strange dogs, not just big ones.
To me that's the rule of thumb. Stay out of someone elses dog's face until they know you.
I wouldn't just apply this to only big dogs.
To the OP, I feel your pain. We have two pit mixes and when we first adopted them my family was like "why would you get a pit bull?" Now of course once they met the dogs it was a different story, but in the beginning we had to listen to it.
I would be so pizzed off if someone said what the people behind you said and I probably would have turned around on a dime and started walking right at them, stopped and said "Nahhh...he prefers chicken over human!
Idiots. Unfortunately the world is full of em!

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs
I completely understand. I have a Rottie who is about 80 lbs also, she is the sweetest thing ever. I also have a German Sheperd/Akita mix and he is about 105 lbs...both are very sweet. Unfortunately people make assumptions about both of them b/c of their size and the breed. And sometimes I'm just not understanding about the comments like you received, my dogs are my kids...and better behaved than alot of people's children.

Re: Misconceptions of Big Dogs
I have 3 pitbulls, I take the calmest most timid one to craft fairs and outside events and we clear aisles b/c she's "a pitbull" Whenever someone makes a comment I tell them that I am more likely to bite then she would so beware of the owner not the dog. People pick up their dogs as if their dog is gonna be my dogs lunch. If she was mean and ferocious she wouldnt be there-let people think what they want....its just called ignorance!!!!!

But to me this is a fairly rational fear. You had an incident with a big dog when you were younger so I can understand where you're coming from with being afraid.
But with that in mind, would you purposefully make a nasty comment so that someone who was walking near you with a big dog could hear?
To me, that's just rude/mean in general. KWIM?

That makes complete sense to me, I wouldn't blame you in the least bit. Unfortunately, that's not the case all the time.
BTW, I'm so sorry you had an experience like that. That's horrible.
