I think this was the story I was thinking of...http://www.parentdish.com/2009/04/29/north-dakota-mom-accused-of-breastfeeding-while-drunk/

"The case is raising all sorts of questions about alcohol and breastfeeding, specifically what amount of drinking constitutes child neglect. The La Leche League advises nursing mothers not to breastfeed while drunk, of course, but does not put a complete prohibition on drinking and nursing. According to their web site, it takes two to three hours for a serving of beer or wine to completely pass through the system of a 120 pound woman, so a glass of wine with dinner is fine, as long as mom times her drinking to fall between feedings.

But, the LLL adds, "The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount the mother consumes." Because of this, some experts advise nursing moms to stay away from the hooch altogether. "No matter how little you drink," cautions lactation consultant Dee Grabanski, "you are potentially exposing your baby to alcohol." "

The woman in this story was described as extremely intoxicated, but they dont even state the BAC.

The woman in the OP's story drank 2 beers. It's not enough to affect her milk based on Hale's studies.

This is a really interesting home study. I dont have much research on it, but it's defninitely out there. Thomas Hale and Jack Newman are the people to read if you're interested in reseraching it more

Breast milk and alcohol study

There's really very little that can damage breastmilk. It's quite an amazing and resilient organism.

Who is this dr? I don't see this as an issue of breast milk being "damaged". It's simply an issue of what is in a mom's system is also in her breastmilk. There has been no article or group that states that they are 100% sure of the effects of even a minute amt of alcohol on a baby, that's the take home message I hear to be honest.

Both are leading doctors in research related to breastfeeding. They are both well known.

Clearly it depends on the lens in which you are reading these studies that influences your decision. I have read them all. If, after doing extensive research, a mother is comfortable drinking alcohol in moderate amounts with no proven harm to the baby, who is anyone to judge? Definitely not that uninformed waitress or cop.

From my understanding, (and I could be misunderstanding) and this is after reading some of Dr Jack Newmans work, not a lot of alcohol passes into the breastmilk...the same goes for many medications. Just because it's in a woman's blood stream, doesn't mean it passes into the breast milk in the same concentration. Not sure I read it right, and I hardly ever drink, so this isn't really a problem for me while BFing. But it is important information to know and spread!

It's fine if someone, as a mother, chooses not to consume alcohol while nursing. It is also the right of a establishment to no longer serve alcohol to someone they think has had enough. But to call the police on a mother who is nursing her child while nursing a drink? That's not fine.

I am not sure why you always to have to post on breast feeding topics. When we all know you are anti breast feeding and like to stir the pot and create drama.

That's me. Enjoying one beverage, leisurely, while nursing in public.

Judge away.

For shame!

I can't judge. I believe I sipped your beverage that day. While pregnant.

Arrest me!

Go scratch.

The only one creating drama and stirring the pot is you. We are having an intelligent DISCUSSION about a topic about a woman who got arrested, which the OP asked our "thoughts" on. Therefore, I will reply to ANY topic I want whenever I want, just as everyone else does.

On your level of thinking, the person starting a thread that they know is controversial should have the same thing said to them no about posting to stir the pot? (OP, I don't care that you posted this, you wanted us to discuss it and you have every right to post whatever you want). I would reply to this or any other topic that is asked by a poster to discuss that I find interesting for whatever reason.

I guess the woman thought it was illegal or a danger to they child. And if the mother was drunk, it would have been a danger to the child for sure (although maybe not actually illegal). I would assume most people don't know the laws on this. I didn't. Maybe the police officer didn't either? Hard to call a judgement on something like this and people get upset when they see a baby being potentially "harmed".

BTW< drama seeker, apparently you must also post under another name, b/c you seem to know about me and yet you only have 236 posts since 2006. And you clearly just logged on to this one to start the very drama you are accusing ME of. I call double poster on you,why not post under your real name that you clearly post more often on if you are so sure you're so right and justified to attack me?

Love when people have under cover balls. Chat Icon You conveniently just logged on and decided to respond to me on this thread? Ok right.

Everyone is saying it's okay to drink and bf but I always thought people " pump and dump". Either way it's a dumb story bc it's so ridiculously unclear whether she had two beers with her food or was boozing on hardliquor.

If you are drunk, you need to pump and dump. If you have 2 beers with a meal over an hour and a half you would have no reason to dump the milk.

Pump and dump is a myth. You only need to pump and dump if you are drunk and uncomfortable. if you don't pump at all, the alcohol will leave your system in the same time it leaves your blood. When you're ok to drive, you're ok to nurse.

Chat Icon This is my understanding.

I do agree that it's ridiculous to report on a story when the facts are so unclear. It's useless to try to take a side when we don't know how much she drank or whether or not she was too drunk to nurse or even care for her child.

This.

Pump and dump is a waste of good milk! Unless you're engorged and need to empty out. Otherwise wait until you're not drunk and then the milk is fine.

I don't drink very often after having dd but whenever I have a drink or two it's usually when she's gone to bed and won't wake to nurse for hours. I would feel comfortable with 1-2 drinks and at least an hour before having to nurse.

If it wasn't about breastfeeding people would be applauding the waitress for speaking up for the child. If you are going to drink alcohol and nurse in public at the same time you are going to draw criticism. Maybe the amount she was drinking was nominal and would have no ill effects on the baby, but the waitress was clearly concerned and did what she felt was right. I won't blame a person for bring over zealous if they genuinely thought a baby was in danger. We are taught, as a general rule, to not drink when pregnant or breastfeeding. That is what most people still hold to be true. Clearly the cop was concerned as well, otherwise he would not have taken her into custody. I don't have an issue with the waitress, she made a judgement call for a baby.
