Moms of boys: Spinoff to circumcision
In case this baby is a boy, I'm trying to learn all I can and be prepared so please bear with me. I really know nothing about taking care of boys.
I see alot of you saying that there is alot of extra skin after the circumcision. Is this because it was not done well in the first place?
Is there something you can do or say to the OB doing the procedure?
Other than putting Vaseline on it until it heals, what else do you have to do (after healing) as far as care, and/or to try to prevent this reattachment some of you are talking about?
TIA for any help you can give me. I really feel like this baby is a boy.

Yes, I believe it's because it wasn't done well ( same DR for both of mine). My ped said it's usally b/c they are nervous to get too close so they leave a little extra skin. You could mention it but it may not help.
I KNEW about it from my first and it still happened!! You can pull the skin back at each changing and bathtime. My DS's #2 reattached while it was healing so that's where it gets tricky. When it was still raw I didn't want to pull it back. I would just pay close attention to it. I let the ped know and she pulled it apart when he was only 2 months and it wasn't bad at all. It was a little raw and I had to apply vaseline again but it was fine. Now I make sure I pull it back all the time.

Re: Moms of boys: Spinoff to circumcision
The doctors will always leave the extra skin to allow room to grow. It has nothing to do with the circumcision being done incorrectly. What you should do is not hesitate and pull back the skin and clean around the head area with each change (this is after it healed of course). During the course of healing (two weeks appx.) apply a lot of vaseline and gauze onto the tip (so that it does not stick to the diaper). My DS's penis healed very quickly and nicely. It was during the last few months that somehow the rim of his head reattached to the body of the penis. I pulled back and cleaned it, but maybe not as far as I should have. Thats why I said, don't hesitate, pull it all the way back and clean it.

Re: Moms of boys: Spinoff to circumcision
The mohel explained it to us this way. If he cuts too much, there's no easy repair for it. If he cuts to little, we may need to have more cut later and there will be no permanent injury. Which would you prefer? As it turns out, my son healed fine. The mohel was just explaining why some people have to be re-done. It's all an estimate on his part and he'd rather leave too much than too little.
