Re: Moms of easy babies...

Yes, I'm a mom of an easy baby. He's 3 now and has been such a good child. Always played by himself, slept well, never had teething issues. Well, then came my DD and all hell broke loose....

She is just like you describe your Alex. She never stops. She cries so much and is always under my feet. I guess as they say, payback is a B!tch!

wow, you're an amazing woman!!! You're right, it is very easy to judge others especially when some of us have no experience with spirited children (or any children for that matter). I appreciate your sharing of some perspective.

Re: Moms of easy babies...

I have a pretty easy baby. She started sleeping 7-8 hours a night around 3 months old, just when I went back to work. Now, she sleeps 10 hours and goes down at 9pm on the dot.

We aren't ready for #2 yet but we feel that when he/she arrives, we'll be in for a rude awakening!

Amen SISTA I Hear YA!!!

Just an example. I brought my daughter home a bag of 50% of sunglasses. She is OBSESSED with sunglasses because Loonette (From Comfy Couch-- UGH-- Thanks DH for that one) wears them. So I walk in and I say Mommy has a surprise for you. I hand her the bag filled with sunglasses. So what does she do????? She throws the bag across the room and smashes it into the wall!!! I said D you don't want to see what's in there? Sunglassies I know. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon My Mom just looks at me Chat Icon She says D that wasn't nice. My daughter then says no I wuuuuuuuuuvvvvvvvvvvv them. Everytime with 1 exception if anyone gives my daughter ANYTHING she throws it. It's embarrassing and awful. I don't even want to begin to explain ChristmasChat Icon Chat Icon

I definitely feel your pain. This is just a mild explanation of my daughter's 'spirit'!!

I blame my mother---- for all the years she said to me, may you have a daughter 100x worse then you wereChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am tremendously proud of my spirited little girl - I know that later in life her temperment will take her very, VERY far. She has so much energy, and such intellect - combined it can lead her to the greatest success imaginable, or, if undirected, to serious problems. My mission as a mother, and a parent, is to guide her in ways that she can direct her energy in positive ways. It can be challenging, but it certainly does keep me on my toes.

These kids will have a bright, bright future - on the way there, they will trample on any life left in their parents though Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You have a great outlook, your DD is very lucky to have such an understanding mom who will know how to nurture her "spiritedness" into success!Chat Icon I am lucky that my DD is generally laid back (at least as compared to Alex!), but she still has a Jeckyl/Hyde streak and she can throw a pretty good tantrum. Those moments, when she is uncontrollable, remind me that I should never judge other moms (as long as they are not abusive or neglectful).

I have an easy baby -- so far!!

I will not curse that by thinking she will be this way forever.

And I don't think I judge anyone else...I would tend to be sympathetic more than anything.

So, when you see a frazzled parent out at the mall, or in a restaurant, employing "unusual" techniques to calm an otherwise spirited child - don't judge - please. Just pity will do Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Well said Beth!!! And I do know what you are experiencing. My DS is EXACTLY like your daughter.. with just a butt load of testosterone added to that!!! Some days I get soooooo frustrated with him, its hard to stay sane.

I find myself looking forward to work just to have a "break". Chat Icon When I have those frustrating days with him my MIL will say.."awwww, he doesnt know, understand, realize... etc.....and then if she watches him for 2 hrs then I hear, "Wow, how do you do it? He doesnt STOP for one minute!!!" Chat Icon

He is only calm when he is sleeping. Right now he is obsessed with the street. Running into it whenever we go outside. Its really quite exhausting. Then i hear, "This is a tough age." NOOOOOOOOOOOO, every age with him has been a "tough age!"

But I usually try to just change the subject when it comes to explaining my son to people. They all "think" they have the answers, and unless they've lived it, they really dont know.

I def wasnt prepared for a high maintenace child (since birth). But thru it all, its been quite rewarding as well. Would I do it all again????? I'm leaving that up to God!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Moms of easy babies...

Chat Icon You are doing a terrific job with her, Beth. I think I have a "middle of the road" child (so far) but I see her becoming more and more spirited. I'm sure that comes with her advancing age too. One of my best friends is a special ed teacher - works with 1st grade inclusion children with different "issues" and her first daughter is extremely spirited. I remember my friend saying "I do behavior modification for living, been doing it for many years. Why can't I get my DD to behave?!?" She finally came to terms with the fact that this is the way DD is and she has done what she can. Her second DD is very different - not as spririted, but still not easy. It's funny though, I have another friend with a very easy baby. From day 1 he slept at night AND napped well. She just could not understand how my DD didn't sleep through the night for the longest time and was a poor napper. Then I stayed with her for a few days and she then understood. I think she probably thought I was doing something wrong until she saw it for herself that it was just the way DD is.

I hope your next one is less challenging! Chat Icon

Re: Moms of easy babies...

I do sympathize with you.. My daughter was like that. Colic until 5 months, never slept or napped. I had a 2 year old when she was born. He always got pushed to the back burner because she required alot more attention. I can remember being pregnant in the supermarket, I had a severe headache and she was lying on the floor having a full tantrum. She never really like TV. Was a jumper and climber. She is still my hardest child, but she is also my brightest. Out of my 3 kids she is always willing to try new things. She is an adventurous type of kid and I love that in her. Now at 12, I enjoy her so much more. (Im rested now)
