Moms of reflux babies
If you have/had your DC on meds for their reflux, when did you stop (or will you) giving it to them?
DD is on Zantac from a little before 2 months old. Now that she's approaching 5 months, i'm starting to think she might not need them anymore. The last week has been a whirlwind in this house. We've had doc appts, my DH was working a million hours a week, then he was in the hospital for a few days. I was with him there and had my mom and MIL watch DD. They forgot multiple times to give DD her Zantac mind you I left them instructions and everything. BUT she seems fine!! I've tried to get her back on track, giving them to her twice a day. She's starting to refuse her meds too. She keeps her mouth shut, or she'll "store" the zantac in her mouth and spit it out once I take my hand away lol She's been burping just fine, no arching of her back or crying out. Maybe the Nutramigen on it's own would be ok? Should I talk to the Ped?

Re: Moms of reflux babies
My ped hinted that at around 6 months we could try. He said you naturally start weaning before then because if you aren't increasing the dosage, they are growing so it's weaning them off. My daughter will be 6 months in a week and a half, but I've already been decreasing. I forgot a few times and didn't notice any difference, so I've been giving her the meds only once a day, and I think I'm just going to stop and see what happens.

Re: Moms of reflux babies
DS hated the taste of the zantac so we had to change to axid when he was almost 4 months old. We are on 1ML 3 times a day. But he only gets 1ML 2 times a day most days. We have tried to wean him down to one dose a day, but it was a no go. He was miserable. He is now 8 months old.

Re: Moms of reflux babies
DS is almost 5 months old and I haven't been giving him the Zantac for the last few weeks.
When he started solids at 4 months, I noticed that he was spitting up a lot less. He also wasn't arching any more. So I stopped giving it to him and he is fine.
At his 4 month appointment, the doctor didn't change his dose because we started to think that he didn't need to be on it much longer.
I probably should have called the doctor before I stopped giving the medicine to him, but he seemed fine!

Alexa is 16.5 months and still on Prevacid. We re-introduced dairy at 13 months and she did great. We are hoping to get her off the meds soon...

Re: Moms of reflux babies
my ped told many/most children are fine around 6 months. the rest usually at a year. that being said, ds was still spitting up tons at 6 mo, and we had increased his does aroudn 5 months? i dont remember. anyhow, we kept him on it until about 10 months hwen he oputgrew his dose. the way the zantac works, its weight dependant. if you child puts on weight, and is fine, basically hte zantac is doing nothing, since his dose os for a lower weight, and you can jsut stop it. no need to wean off it slowly at that point.

Re: Moms of reflux babies
It doesn't hurt to try.
We tried completely being off when DS was 7 months. His dosage hadn't been increased in about 3 months and he had gained a TON of weight so in essence we were already weaning. Well, 1 week after being off of it completely the reflux can back with a vengeance!!! My poor baby was arching, crying, refusing his bottle - it had never been that bad before, ever Needless to say we went back on Zantac at a much higher dose. He's almost 9 months so we'll be trying again soon.

Re: Moms of reflux babies
We tired at 4 months and again at 6 months and it was clear that Ds needed it. DS is 8 months, and we will try again at 9 months.

Re: Moms of reflux babies
Jacen wasn't able to stop Zantac until 15 months. We tried to wean him 3 times prior to that and it never worked.
