Moms of toddlers with food allergies...
Do you let your child eat in restaurants?
I haven't let my DD eat anything that wasn't made by me yet. It's hard when we go out or get take-out because she reaches for the food on my plate. I'm too afraid to give her anything because of possible cross-contamination.
Am I being overly neurotic?
Thanks.

Re: Moms of toddlers with food allergies...
I think it depends on what allergy and how severe it is.
My DD has a dairy and egg allergy. In the begining I used to bring her stuff until I figured out what she could and couldn't have. Once, I figured that out I would order her things at places. If I noticed dairy on it, I sent it back and had them remake. I always kept benedryl on hand just in case.

Re: Moms of toddlers with food allergies...
My DS had a reaction to walnuts ( I think that was the nut -it was trail mix). This Saturday he'll get a bloodtest for all tree nuts. If he is allergic, we will still eat out, but I'll ask how it is made and make sure to say he is allergic. Luckily he is fine with peanuts, which he has had tons fo times. You just have to make sure the item in question isn't in there, but you all have to live.

Same.
We only go to restaurants that list their allergen information at the restaurant on on their website, which definitely limits our options but I feel much more comfortable with. When we order I make sure to tell them he's dairy allergic and ask the waitress/waiter to let the kitchen know so they pull out all fresh utensils, etc. to avoid cross contamination. I find everyone is very willing to help, they want to avoid a negative experience as much as we do.
I always have his epi-pen and benedryl with me just in case.
It's scary at first but you get used to it. The only other option is to stay home for all meals which gets tedious.
