Moms of young kids with glasses - question 1:

When your DC started wearing glasses in the beginning, did they act different?

Cailen has been a lunatic all morning with them - I mean - really, really hyper and just crazy Chat Icon We have been calling him the mad scientist.

We are wondering if wearing the glasses is over stimulating him now that he is seeing so much - it is new stimuli for him that he needs to process....

Did you see this happen?

Re: Moms of young kids with glasses - question 1:

I had glasses starting when I was 6, and yes, it is kind of overstimulation. I would gradually get him used to it--he doesn't have to wear them all waking hours if he went years without them. It's not like he's driving! Chat Icon

As for the costume, I'd let him go without for trick or treating. It does complicate things like sports and stuff too. If he is playing soccer or baseball, he may need the really ugly plastic googles over the glasses to protect in case the glasses break.

I got contacts at a young age (11) to avoid all of this, because it really is a pain! GL to him (and you!).

Thanks - although technology can change as he gets older (he's 3) - his eyesight is SO impaired, and he has such severe astigmatism, I am going to assume that contacts might not be an option for him.

DH and I put the lenses up against our eyes, and so did his grandma - and we were shocked at how strong the lenses were. His eyesight is significant (and again, I marvel at the fact that none of us knew!!!)

He is athletic and I already am concerned about that foir sports, but they had some sport goggles at the eye place that are not the most gorgeous but they aren't as ugly as they used to be.

ETA - he doesn't want to take them off, which I guess really means he realizes how much he needs them to see!

I don't remember Robbie acting differently - but he did break his glasses accidentally a few times. To be honest.. I really just don't remember.

He plays baseball with his glasses and we have had no issues at all so far. He will not wear sports lenses and since it's not an uber-competitive contact sport we haven't pushed the issue. He does all of his normal activities without issue (scooter, bike, skateboard, etc..). He doesn't wear them when swimming, sleeping or bathing but other than that they are on him all day, every day.

I don't have any direct experience, but imagine how exciting it must be for him because for ages he hasn't seen anything clearly! And all the sudden, the world looks brilliant! Fantasic! Wouldn't you be hyper??

Re: Moms of young kids with glasses - question 1:

My sister has very bad eyesight, got glasses in kindergarten. She has a severe astigmatism and every year they tell her if her eyes get any worse she won't be able to get new contacts, and eery time she goes ace her eyes are a little worse and the contacts are a little better and she is able to get new ones.
Every single eye doctor she has ever seen tells her she is among the worst cases they have seen in someone young. So there is hope for your little man to be able to wear contacts!

Liza - I have horrible eyesight...I got glasses when I was 7, and was in bifocals by 10. I have severe astigmatisms in both eyes....but in 10th grade I got contacts and I have worn them ever since. Chat Icon
I don't remember acting any differently when I got my glasses....but I don't remember a whole lot from that time. I do remember freaking out about the bifocals because they created a "step" floating in the air in front of me. Chat Icon

He's going to do great!Chat Icon

My brother was in glasses at 3. He also had a severe astigmatism and is far sighted. My Mom remembers him being a little out of sorts for a couple of weeks. But it wore off. I guess he was happy to be able to see better...Chat Icon

Re: Moms of young kids with glasses - question 1:

I got glasses when i was 6 -- terrible vision. I remember that everything looked very strange at first and it took me a few days to adjust to the glasses. I wasn't hyper, but I felt sick and dizzy. Everyone handles it differently!
